What did I ruin? Starter ran 4 minutes straight!!!

Okay, here is the deal...I had the starter wire zip tied out of the way of the exhaust manifold...somehow, the zip tie had broken and the starter wire grounded to the manifold because of the heat of the manifold burned off the insulation. This caused the starter to turn for 4 minutes straight without stopping. Needless to say, I replaced the starter after seeing how black the commutator bars were. I also replaced a section of the purple wire that goes to the starter. Still no cranking of the engine. What did I fry???

I checked BCM codes and none are present. I checked PCM codes and none are present. I also pulled up a wiring diagram and found that the only things in the circuit are a fusible link (I checked all fusible links and they are all fine) the ignition switch, the clutch start switch, and a theft deterrent relay. IS IT POSSIBLE to toast any one of these items due to the length of time that the starter ran for??

Before you ask any questions...I had NO tools with me and I tried multiple times to break the battery cable in some way. Also, I checked and I have no power getting to the starter via the hold in (purple wire). Any thoughts???

Thanks

Funny cause this same thing happened to me the other day, but my starter did it byitself b/c the solenoid got stuck, but anyways, how do you know the replacement isnt a lemon? Have you double checked your connections at the starter? What do you mean by "break the battery cable"? Have you checked your batt. voltage (should be 12.5 v. or so)?

If you get now power on the purple wire when the key is in the START position, the first thing in the circuit back toward the switch is the theft deterrent relay.

Yeah...I checked and found no power getting to the theft deterrent relay. I checked the clutch start switch and it is operating fine. Then I found that no power was getting to the clutch start switch (using test light). I checked the red wire before the ignition switch and found power getting to the ignition switch and no power after the switch. Looks like I will be putting a new ignition switch on the car.

(By the way...where in the hell is the theft deterrent relay?? I just found the wire that was running to it and tested it by poking a hole in the insulation. The picture that the service manual shows is just absolute junk and doesn't even give me the slightest clue...)

Any tips for any of you that have done this??? The service manual states to remove the steering column??? Is this actually necessary??? I see two brackets that could be removed along with an SIR harness and I should be able to visually see the ignition switch.

Any tips for me???

Thanks

That is how I know that I just don't have a faulty replacement.

Beleive it or not, removing the column makes it easier, IMO. Take a good look at the plug to the ignition switch. It might be toasted (see pics in help below).

Here is some help.
