What causes O2 sensors to fail?

Tryin to figure this out. Got tranny and everything fixed. The other day my car started acting funny spitting and sputtering. Get on it hard and black smoke came out the back. Dad said that from behind all he smelt was gas following me. The scan came back that one O2 bank was reading lean. So i am replacing both O2 sensors. Problem is they have less than 2000 miles since the motor was built. Although the entire car did sit up for about 8 months before the tranny got built after the motor. Could the sitting have caused the O2 sensors to go bad. They were brand new when i built the motor last november.

I don't want to be in the same spot dropping another 100 for O2 sensors in a month.

Thanks,
JoMo
