what is the best muffler to buy??
i had the american thunder flowmaster on my first z(94) it sounded nice but my z i have now which is also a 94 i went with the borla,,,,at wide open throttle i think ya cant match the sound of the borla its simply awesome,,,,,,,,,,,,,and loud as hell also
Well there is a big difference...Catback utilize all new 3" piping and a new muffler, where as the muffler uses the stock piping. I'd get a catback if I were you.
Some favorites on the board are:
Borla
GMMG
Hooker
Magnaflow
Flowmaster
Edelbrock
SLP
MAC
Random Tech
Corsa
and more...

Borla makes a muffler that is a direct replacement for the stock one. Not a cat-back. I just bought one of those, but haven't installed it yet. Can't wait though. Much cheaper also. I honestly don't think there is all that much to gain from a cat-back. Doesn't the Z28 have a 3'' exhaust stock?
If you just get a muffler and stay with the stock pipe, go with a Flowmaster 2-chamber. If your going to get a full cat back, the best value IMO is the Hooker and it gives great sound and gains although it is aluminized. If you want a stainless cat back, go with Corsa, GMMG, or Borla. The stainless will be alot more pricey tho.

EDIT: I forgot to mention above to be sure to gut the cat for better gains as well.
