went to autozone

my coil is fine, and in between the recomended volts... but the guy said to check the pcv valve or something...

what is this thing that he speaks of? he showed me what it was, but what does it do?

positive crankcase ventilation -- lets your crankcase release pressure buildup

if you dont have it, or if its badly clogged, the pressure will build up in the crankcase causing blowby -- oil getting past your rings causing smoking and other problems. Also, oil will eventually begine to shoot out of the dipstick when you floor it since its trying to get rid of the pressure. To check your PCV vave, just take it off and shake it. if it sounds like a little bead is shaking around inside, its good. If there is no sound, its bad, replace it. Probably costs around 2.50 at autozone.

pcv valve

the pcv valve is located at the back of the passenger side valve cover right?

I went to auto zone to get a new one and went to put it on but the existing one on the car was just hollow. Looked at my other friends lt1 and it was the same way.
Why is this

What exactly is the problem your car has that you felt the coil needed to be tested, and then the guy at autozone said to check your PCV valve?? I am failing to see the correlation between the coil and the PCV valve here......

Your first mistake was going to autozone

Maybe he ment your EGR Valve....another unrelated item. Is your car surging or bogging? If that was the case I can see why he would say it was the EGR valve if that's what he ment.

9/10 People at AutoZone don't even owrk on cars...they just work there.

well ive already replaced the egr gasket, but i wanted to replace the coil cause it looked like ****, the sparkplug looking thing that the dist/coil plug goes to lookes like something that had been rolling around on the freeway for a few weeks, it was just trashed, so they offered to test it instead of me buying one, and he said that it was in between the right ranges.

he told me the pcv usually goes before the coil so i might wanna check that out.

PCV is on the driverside of the intake.

It looks that way because that is NOT the PCV valve. The PCV valve is on the driver's side of the intake. See posts above.

The line on the passenger side of the intake, that runs from the throttle body to the "hollow" elbow on the passenger side of the valve cover is the line that supplies filtered, MAF measured (94 and up) air to the PCV system. The air is pulled from a port in front of the throttle blades, through the hose and into the passenger side valve cover, and is then pulled through the crankcase and lifter valley by the vacuum through the PCV valve, then into the intake where it is burned with the air/fuel charge.

A plugged PCV valve will not cause blowby, since the pressure will escape through the vent line on the passenger side valve cover. But if you do have excessive piston ring blowby, it is very likely that you will get an excessive backflow in this line, and fill the top of the TB, under the cover plate with oil, and coat the inside of the TB and intake manifold.

Not sure what any of this has to do with checking the coil.....
