Exclamation Weird noise coming from headers??

Just got my bbk shorties installed. Im driving around these past couple of days and notice:

1) When accelerating you hear this ticking sound from the headers
2) When at a red light with my foot on the break, you hear this vibrating sound coming from the headers
3) Sometimes on a turn, as Im turning the streering wheel you hear that vibrating sound

Any ideas?

Check the collector for bolts possibly loosening, Also go around the bolts one more time and make sure they are tight. Vibrating from the headers is due to them rubbing on a component..

The ticking sounds like an exhaust leak. The joy of headders. Keep watch on the bolts for the first 2-3 weeks. After that they should be allright. (I just used locking headder bolts to solve this PITA)

I have Jet-Hot LTs and notice the vibrations you are talking about. They are especially bad when the car is cold and gets better when it warms up. Are these kinds of vibrations that go away - or get better - as the car warms to be expected with headers?

My vibrations are really bad when the car is cold. When it warms up its a bit better, but you still hear it. Could it be the ticking sounds is a normal thing? My freind has SLP LTs and he has the same sound. No exhaust leaks.

Check to make sure that the headers and Y-pipe are not touching any body parts or even your steering linkage. This will cause excess vibration to be heard.

The ticking sound is almost for sure an exhaust leak.

Re: Weird noise coming from headers??

The ticking noise is most likely an exhaust leak but not the cause of the vibration. The y pipe or headers are touching the chassis causing the vibration.

I have been told that the ticking sound was sometimes caused by the the headers being alot thinner than your stock manifolds, but never rule out a possible leak. I noticed you have the Borla catback, i had a terrible noise/vibration at stop lights, it turned out to be where my "Y" pipe and intermediate pipe met, there was a flat piece of metal brace, that the pipe was rubbing. I put some washers as spacers so the pipe doesnt hit. That brace im talking about is just below the tranny mount, dont know what its called.Middle of the car.

im hoping thats the case with the ticking sound & not an exhaust leak. Over the weekend Ill tightned up the bolts again and play around with the pipe so its not leaning on naything. Ill keep ya posted.

Exclamation Re: Weird noise coming from headers??

So I fixed the vibrating noise problem. It seems that the Y-pipe was touching somewhere. So that noise went away.

Only noise I have now is that ticking noise. The ticking noise happens when I accelerate, its a constant ticking. My mechanic said that its defintley not an exhaust leak. that possible?

Otherwise the headers are great. You feel such a big diffrence right away. I LIKE IT!

Re: Weird noise coming from headers??

I have that exact same ticking noise with my AS&M Headers that you discribed.
Like you said, its only there when I accelerate. I showed it to a mechanic too and he said that its normal and definitly is not a header leak. Still is a little strange though but I guess its because the headers are thinner than the cast manifolds.
