Re: Weird Idle Issues

If the crack is on the part where the connector fits, you will need a new opti. That part is not part of the cap.

Water pump and crank pulley have to be removed. Hub can stay on, if it is a stock one.

Re: Weird Idle Issues

I found a complete used unit at a local auto wrecker for $150.00 out of a 94 Z28 like ours. I think maybe we misjudged the unit, this one also flexes if you push on the top wiring connector. I am hoping that we just got it wet washing the engine down it starts fine now. I found that MSD makes a cap and rotor that seem reasonably priced here in Canada, about $150.00. The car is almost 20 years old and always been a race car, so I'm thinking it might be time to change out those parts. Any comment?? Do we still need to remove the water pump etc to change that cap?

lol I think they could have done a little better. That is part of the reason I went to the ltcc and have coil per cyllinder so I can eliminate the cap and rotor maintainance issue plus it gave me simple triggerable retard for when I spray. Dont forget to loctite the rotor screws if and when you do cap and rotor.

Re: Weird Idle Issues

Now that it has had a couple of days to dry out it seems to run fine again, the next step is to run it on a dyno before I take it to the track. Is there anyway to test the used opti I bought from the wreckers to make sure its good? I only have a 30 day warranty with it.

Re: Weird Idle Issues

I don't recommend anything but a GM/ACDelco/Delphi optispark. When you go with the cheap stuff, there is a very good chance you'll get bit. You think you are aggravated about having to pull the water pump to get to the opti now? Wait until you have to do it all over again because of a cheap opti.

Re: Weird Idle Issues

I found it on a corvette website, and a few of them have had luck with it. The GM unit here in Canada is about $1400.00 lol.............

Re: Weird Idle Issues

The description is "suspect" at best:

The Billet Distributor is equipped with a large cap (Ford only) that has spark plug style terminals for secure wire attachment and maximum protection against crossfire.
Under the brass terminals of the cap and rotor is an extremely accurate hall effect pickup which never requires adjustment.
"Ford only"???

Stock pickup, and every aftermarket replacement is an optical sensor. Somehow I can't quite picture 360 tiny teeth on a reluctor generating the high resolution pulses with a lot of accuracy. Then there's the issue of the second sensor required to produce the low resolution, variable length pulses that identiry the individual cylinders. Might have lost something in the translation from Chinese...

you dont have to buy the gm unit from the dealership. Buy it online and pay a little more for shipping. I picked my delphi up for $350. That was as cheap as I found and the cheapest ac delco was $450 shipped.

Re: Weird Idle Issues

Thanks again to everyone who posted for all your help! The one on the car seems to have dried out and it runs okay. I think I will take your advice and get a Delphi one if we need it.

You cannot attach a picture directly from your PC (Neither can anyone else). You have to post a link to the online server where the photo is stored. If you don't have a site to upload it, go to UserCP and start an "Album". Upload the pictures. Then you can link to them.
