Weird idle and check engine light
Weird idle and check engine light
On my 94 z28, my SES light comes on occasionally. My scanner is only for OBDII, and the ones we have at work for OBD I (autozone) got stolen a while back. No other parts store can scan OBDI in my town. Anyways, so I got the 'key' to jump the two pins on the ALDL port and when I do it, the engine light just stays on. It doesn't flash any codes, it's just a solid light. I tried doing it with the engine running, and it's just a steady flash one after the other... what could be wrong? Why can't I pull any codes?
A second question, my idle is really odd sometimes. When I'm sitting at a stoplight, sometimes it will jump up to 1200-1500 RPM, sometimes it drops unusually low almost to the point where it dies... around 400 rpm. I've never had it die on me, but I'm wondering what it is. Could it be my IAC valve or something similar? Or is this a common problem with an easy fix?

The "cheapo" (~$30) Actron scanner does nothing more than short the pins. It won't work any better than a paper clip. He needs free scanning software (FreeScan, DataMaster) or a used "real" scanner like an Auto X-Ray.
Wow, that sucks. I've got ProScan software and cable, but it's for OBD II only. What would be a good, cheap, effective software/hardware package for OBD I (and OBD II) scanning and maybe tuning?
