Weird "clunk" sound. Help

Ok, guys and girls. I'm getting a weird clunk sound when I accelerate and decelerate, but it doesnt clunk when I put it in and out of gear. I checked the tranny mount, its fine. I checked the U joints, they are fine. I check the motor mounts, they are fine.

What else could it be??

Welcome to my world

If yours is anything like mine its a UCO, unidentifed Clunking noise. Iv had a slight thud or clunk for about 2 months now. Only does it in cold weather so go figure. Iv had it looked at by 3 shops and they all they dont know what it is. The car runs fine and like i said only does it when its cool weather outside 55 degrees and higher no noise. If you find out anything let me know.

i had the same problem, wasnt my differential, tranny mount was falling apart so i swapped it out for a poly piece, still clunked. motor mounts were fine, and just about evrything i could thing of was fine. this has been going on since march when i got the car, and it just went away in the past week or two. the only thing i can tell you is to drive it until something breaks.

well if its on a 3-2 coast down shift then it may be that you need a spacer plate between the valve bobdy and tranny shell. there is a gm bullitin on this. might try that, its like a 3.00 peice.

I wondering if this is one of those F-Body anomalies. A lot of people have it, but dont know where its coming from

If anyone finds out what that is, please keep us posted. I get that as well, and I also get it if I turn a corner and moderately accelerate. I just replaced the tranny mount (it was doing it before and now as well), u-joints are fine, I just replaced the tranny fluid/filter also. One question that I have is about using synthetic fluid in the rear diff. I used Valvoline synthetic blend, and I don't know if that may be causing the clunk.

Mine ('96 TA M6) has "clunked" since the day I bought it new. I even had multiple dealers check it out but all reports came back "normal". For me, it is especially loud while turning at slow speeds when the car is coasting in 2nd gear. The sound is coming from the rear of the car. One of the GM mechanics told me it was something to do with play in the pinion shaft assembly and that it was completely normal. I can somewhat reproduce the sound by shutting my car off, putting it in 2nd gear and rocking it back and forth (with the parking brake off). The last time I changed my differential fluid I left the girdle cover off and doing the same test the noise was even louder. Also I did notice a little play between the input pinion shaft and movement of the ring gear. It's been that way for 91k miles, so I guess if it was going to break it would've already done so. I've also checked the tranny mounts and torque arm as well and they're fine.

I'm thinking it could also be an artifact of the differential design (standard Trans Am LSD rearend) because it only clunks when the torque on the differential changes directions: moving forward or coasting in gear (compression braking). I say this because I can also blip the throttle while coasting forward in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear at engine idle speed and it'll clunk as the differential cycles from negative-torque to positive-torque and back again.

Hope this makes some sense...

I would say, replace the Tranny mount. It definately sounds like it. You never know...it may be cracked and you dont know it. I used a heavy duty Poly "energy suspension" mount and I have no more clunking. check your crossmember for cracks. Something may be lose under there. Check your Torque Arm as well.

Thanks gents, I will check the torque arm, but if that's not it, I think I'll learn to live with it. No onto the gear oil...

I have the low speed turning clunk/grinding? sound. To me it sounds to be coming from the front right wheel area. I also have the clunk/pop on decel to a stop, just as I stop, but that sounds like the tranny I've been all over my car too and can't find anything wrong.

hmm, im not sure...try looking under your car front front to back and look for lose bolts and cracks in your suspension. I do this once a month to make sure everything is cool.
Right now I'm doing my suspension and I'm working my way from back to front. All poly pushings with aftermarket hardware. Ive replaced a few things and and I'm already noticing a big difference in performance and torque. Crazy how a few poly bushings and some aftermarket hardware will do to it..
