Weight Reduction
Weight Reduction
If I do this...
"There are heavy bumper impact beams in the front and rear of the car. I don't recommend removing them for daily driving but you can. Also all that foam crap inside the bumper covers can go away. Door impact beams can be cut out. Spair tire and jack (ofcourse)."
How much weight will I lose from removing the impact beams and the Door Impact beams...?
Is it worth doing it? Are they mainly for protection from accidents?
I want to lose some of the extra weight for a little extra pep in the TA's step...

Re: Weight Reduction
The front bumper filler + support beam on my Formula weighed 19#. The rear filler + beam weighed the same. The front bumper may need a little support, or it will start to sag. Someone makes a brace for the Camaro.

EDITED 2-4-05 to fix broken links
Any fabrication shop can make you a decent tubular bumper support. Randy Mackintosh has one on his car. NickS of FRRAX also made one for his front breather setup. Keep in mind both of these cars are dedicated race cars.
As far as removing side impact support beams... well... it isn't a good idea without some supplementary protection. If you got in a side-impact accident there's nothing left in the door to protect you. Unless of course you gutted the door and did a little cage work...
If you're eager to dump weight off the car, there are a couple pretty "famous" posts out there, particularly THE weight reduction thread at LS1Tech.
Also remember that you can safely save weight by simple things such as a lightweight VFN stock-style hood or tubular K-member. Check the thread above for an exhaustive list.

Re: Weight Reduction
Unless youre running a 6 point rollcage (side bar on cage) I would not remove the bars in the door. A freind of mine has a salvage yard and it's amazing what you see has saved peoples lives. He has a 94 Camaro that had a glancing blow front drivers side colision. the impact starts at the very front DS corner and extends to the rear of the door jam. If the door bar had not been there the person would no doubt had either been killed or severely injured. could you imagine a T-bone there??!!!
