Putting motor in tomorrow.. What oil to use?

Im FINALLY putting my motor in tomorrow. I just dont know what oil to use. Its a golen 383 with a blower. It says in the manual I got with the motor to use 20W 50. Should I? Also, What tool do I need to prime the oil pump? Im trying to think of anything I forgot.. Anyone have anything they want to share with me? from their motor install?

I'm sorry Nick, but don't you think that's kind of a silly question?

Umm....probably not. That's really thick dude. I'd go with a 5w30.

As far as priming the engine I pulled the two fuel injector fuses, and ignition coil wire. Then just crank over motor with key until you see oil pressure on gauge. It took me about 30-45sec to see oil pressure, then put fuses and wire back and fire her up. And cross your fingers like I did, that it starts.

That does sound like pretty thick oil, but Golen probably has a reason for recommending it. If it were me I would go with some 10-30 or 10-40 to get the engine broken in fo a few thousand miles, and then switch to the synthetic of your choice. I'm actually still running 10-30 dino oil in my engine with 11,000 miles on it and no problems here.

Should I use non detergent oil or regular oil? Im going to use 5W 30 for the initial startup and then get thicker as I go.. I like the modil 1 15W 50 motor oil. the red cap one.. I used to use it in my old motor for a while and it seemed to quiet everything down.

I used 99 cent NAPA 10-30 oil for break in and the first two or three oil changes. I wouldn't worry about detergent and non-detergent oil. As far as I'm concerned this whole oil debate is like splitting hairs. Sure, some oils may provide an infinitessimal gain in HP and reduced engine wear, but these are not Winston Cup or Indy cars. Change your oil regularly and you'll be fine. I know a guy who runs nothing but 20-50 NAPA oil in his 502 powerd Caprice drag car. He knows his s**t too.(Master ASE certified independent mechanic who also owns an 8-second 79 Camaro). Just don't be a dumbass like a couple people I know and start the engine with NO OIL in it!

i've always heard its best to use non synthetic oil when you first run the motor for the first 500 miles or so. i guess it collects the small particles of metal that will shave itself durring break in better. I've done 3 motors, and it's worked well for break in. i then switched to mobile 1 full synthetic on 2 of the 3 and used royal purple in the other. i usually put 5w30 or 10w30. doesn't really make much of a difference, and both oils perform excact from what i've seen so far. i'd go for mobile 1 5-10 w30 because it's 4.68 a quart vs some other full synthetics that are 6-8 bucks a quart.

generally, 20w50 works well on older motors (in years and mileage). dad redid a 1966 small block,. and it didn't seem to like 10 w30, but it ran well on 20w50. but for newer, better sealing motors, i'd stick with 5-10 w30
