Looks to me there may have been some debris in the gear when you went together with it (500 Miles ago correct?) breaking one or more teeth and then its just a snowballing effect......
Re: water pump sprocket gear has no teeth...
im helping 96lt1tx with all this and when we put it together there was no debris from the gear. it was actually fine at the time of the install...it just took a **** on us at random...from what he said he drove it almost 400 miles after driving it around town, then when he got in it to take the trip back (another ~400mi) it just crapped out and died. he said there was no severe overheating (floating on the high side of 210 maybe) or anything(meaning the water pump gear was at least functioning somewhat), but when the car died it wouldnt even start again. looking at everything now there is the lifter problem (http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=290427)and the trashed gear. Im sure 96lt1tx can clarify on this later, but i thought i would offer this as more info for those wanting to help

Re: water pump sprocket gear has no teeth...
Here's a thread from last year with another ED set that had a problem with the waterpump drive. http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...&highlight=eat This is also what prompted me to take mine apart and remove that gear.
I thought mine may have had a problem due to the fact that I removed my mechanical waterpump and perhaps that allows the drive shaft to wobble or climb the other gear since the front was only located by the seal. But I don't know, with so many others having issues, including the guy who emailed me and said the machine shop who assembled his short block told him that his ED set was out of round I'm leaning towards a manufacturing issue.

Re: water pump sprocket gear has no teeth...
I have no clue how this happened either...
I replaced the cam and timing set w/ a stock replacement and 500 miles later (after an oil leak "FIXED" by a crappy shop in dallas and a bent pushrod when I got it back) I suppose they collapsed the lifter causing extra stress on the timing set which caused the weakest link i.e. the 75k water pump gear to fail... Now I am hoping that now that I am back home (was in L.A. for a week w/ family) I hope it will start running tomorrow... I am using a magnet in hopes I get all the teeth out of the oil pan that fell in when I took off the cover... anyone have a better suggestion?
thanks
