Water Pump Seal Problem....leaking oil!
Water Pump Seal Problem....leaking oil!
Ok So i just had my water pump replaced. Read the thread please. Basially 2 seals go in this shaft for the water pump, the seals weren' t seated right and they are now leaking oil from the block and leaking on my opti/exhaust/belt.

This guy sent me a PM that said this:
The part is made by Kent Moore and the number is J 39089. That is the special tool you'll need. I called on it and it is very $$$$. It's just a little plastic sleeve but it is over $100. I would get new seals as the current ones might have tears in them. Try Autozone, they carry Timken seals. I know the Felpro/Federal Mogul/National seals all come in a big set. Perhaps Timken makes an individual seal so you won't need the whole set. I could be worng on that though. Anyway, the hardest part, the tools. I live in a small town, I knew the service manager at my dealership so he let me borrow the tools. I remember the box said "LT1 Engine toolkit" on it. You might wanna talk to you dealer and maybe you can work something out like you can put a deposit on it and get it back when you return the tools. The Kent Moore people I talked to about the parts said dealerships are the only ones that will have it if you didn't order from KM directly. I had a very similar problem as yourself and I'm betting that's it. Almost positive.
Please give me any insight you may have! I'm going to be fixing this all day sunday!

Re: Water Pump Seal Problem....leaking oil!
Use a new seal and slip it over a deep socket that is the same diameter (or slightly larger is ok) as the smooth part of the water pump drive shaft the seal rides on. Slide the open end of the socket over the splined part of the w/p drive and butt it against the smooth area. While holding the socket square againt the shaft, slide your seal off the socket and onto the w/p shaft, making sure to avoid catching the seal on the edge or causing the seal to "turn in" (use a little oil for ease of sliding). You can then continue to press the seal into the cover.
There are also some other methods for doing this, but what you are trying to avoid is catching or distorting any of the inside of the seal when getting it onto the shaft. If it gets nicked or bent, it will usually leak. Some people buy several seals in case (or for when
) they screw one up.

Sorry to hear about your troubles
I'd really hate to see you spend $100 on a tool to fix it.
$199 for an EWP
The seal can't leak if you don't need/have one anymore
The HP gain is nice too

The standard WP was a pain in the ***. Im glad I can leave the WP housing on car to just change out the pump. Makes like easier.

wow, I forgot entirely about that peice... that's wierd... I thought the drive gear was the one that had the oil seal. Yeah I threw that junk out too. Probaly resting in a remote corner of my junk draw somewhere. Good ridance to all of that junk. Electric is the way to go.
Re: Water Pump Seal Problem....leaking oil!
The 2 seals that mate with the water pump driveshaft coupling do not seal oil; they keep dirt out of the spline area and keep the coupler from vibrating on the splines. The water pump drive gear seal shouldn't have been disturbed during the water pump replacement; but it is a common oil leak. Follow Shoebox's advise above for replace that seal.

Never mind, I read the link!
Re: Water Pump Seal Problem....leaking oil!
Hey guys, the shaft itself had stripped on the inside, it was not spinnin. Here are some pics
See you can see there are grips on the inside, but they just got so worn they stripeed and woudn't grab and turn the impellar.

Is this the seal?

I thought two seals went on each side of that shaft...

Anywaays believe me I would of went electric but it would of taken a couple more days (They had none in canda) and I was sick of being stranded so they just got a mechanical pump. Oh well. I'll get one for my next motor!

Re: Water Pump Seal Problem....leaking oil!
I have a feeling the o rings are fine so i"m going ahead and picking up a water pump drive seal, which is the top seal on the timing chain cover. Hopefully that will stop the oil. I can't see how the o rings in the coupling drive shaft would help. Get back to me!
