water pump drive shaft wobble!!

ok so i removed my old water pump today to replace the seal and i noticed that the shaft coming out of the engine for the water pump has a little play in it...i can wobble the water pump shaft back and forth a little but not in and out...also the seal is soaked in oil and im sure its leaking...is this normal or is the seal just really blown out or something???please help im really nervous as im in the middle of my first attempt at an engine pull

If the shaft wobbles enough it could ruin the seal. No seal leakage is normal. The shaft may need replacement. It has an integral bearing.
