voltmeter usage

I am still having a problem with the MAF circuit blowing the engine fuse. I will get the car in the air on Sunday to look for the culprit. My question is how do I use a voltmeter to check the amps on the circuit? Where do I place the probe? Thanks.

Re: voltmeter usage

Well the circuit you're talking about If it's 93 to 95, has the MAF, the PCM, the theft deterrent module and the fuel pump relay on it. Any one of those items could be bad or the wires going to anyone of them could be touching the frame somewhere. Your next problem is, a hand held multi meter will only go to 10 amps. You would have to use a clamp type probe to view the actual current since the fuse you're talking about is rated at 15amps. The clamp would then have to be placed near the fuse holder and something would have to be put into the fuse holder to allow current flow. What a PITA.

Instead of all that hassle try a few things. With the fuse out, measure one side of the fuse contacts to find the hot side from the battery. Now measure the other set of fuse contacts with an ohm meter to ground and see what it is. Should be low. Now one at time, unplug the items I listed above and then reconnect them until you see if one increases the resistance substantially when you disconnect it. If none of them increase the resistance, the cances are good you have a wire touching the chassis some where. If that's the case, let us know and we can trace the wiring where it goes through the body so you can check those points.

Good luck tomorrow

Re: voltmeter usage

Thanks for the reply. I keep forgetting I don't have a sig on here. It is a 96 so I know the MAF, skip shift, reverse lockout and two O2s are on there. Can anyone tell me if those are the real O2s (front) or the sims? I suspect the culprit is the skip shift elim but can't telll for sure until I can get under the car.
