...actually.... i bought them off a board member- stock used ones. i should have specified that. They had around 1000 miles (supposedly, but they did look brand new). BUT- it made the same noise before i replaced the lifters. so i dont think thats what it is, but i guess there is always a possibility.

if the noise goes away when the rocker is loosened then it has to be valvetrain. Pull the pushrod out that makes the noise and check for strightness like blackdog said. That would be a good place to start

its definitely not the lifters, I just had 5 bad lifters pulled out..and they made a ticking noise not a knocking noise like that. I've heard rod knock once in my life, and it sounded just like that. Good luck with everything!

put a stethoscope or piece of hose against the oil pan. if its rod knock, you'll hear it

im really hoping that its not rod knock. i didnt get a chance to look at it, but i will do so tomorrow. ill try the stethoscope against the oil pan, but i think it IS in the valvetrain- either lifters, pushrods, or valves.

rod bearing... and to know which cylinder it is, simply remove power to the injectors one by one,to listen for the knock to quite up a bit. or you can drop the pan and feel for play in the rods.

I would say a bent valve. I had bent valves and it sounded exactly the same.
Common cause is incorrect valvetrain geometry. Did you verify geometry??

Rod or main bearing is shot.
Sound is to fast for a valve problem which is half as slow as the crank.

Check the oil and cut the filter open and see.
I woud say you are going to have to pull the motor.

If it is a valve then just pull the covers and youill know real quick, migt get lucky and only be a valve.

you would be able to see a bent valve without taking off the heads? everything looks fine under the valve covers...
