Unhappy VERY! wierd prob, smoke from underhood and no start (long)

Today i had painted my calipers, was very careful not to get overspray anywhere. I took the car off the jackstands and start it. i hear this sound like my starter didnt disengage, and my volts gauge was at 8 or 9v. THis is where it got wierd. I turned it off b/c of the noise, and what i believe is the starter kept going for 2 or 3 mins. It was a high pitch sound, kinda of like the fuel pump sound but it was not coming from the back, it was from the front. Smoke was coming from the passenger side from the front of the tranny I totally freaked out and disconnected the batt. Now it wont even turn over and the volts read about 12v until i try to crank it- then it all goes to zero. I am very sure my starter is fried, or well atleast something fried. THis is really the only car i have to drive I hope someone has an opinion/advice.

My car did the same thing one day when driving to work. Plan on getting a new starter.

Usually, the solenoid or the bendix (part that mechanically moves the starter gear to engage the flywheel) gets stuck. It's a bad scene (as you know) and by the time you can get the battery disconnected, the starter is pretty much fried.
