Very Low oil pressure and non at idle.... HELP!!!

All of a sudden I was driving my car and the oil pressure gauge dropped to 0. So I pulled over and check the motor. The oil level was fine and the oil pressure sender was in great condition and not broken. I let the motor cool for a few minutes and started it again. There was oil pressure but it was very low, then I revving it up a little and the oil picked up, but not as high as it usually is. As I revved it (from under the hood) I notice a kind of knocking sound coming from the intake , once I stopped revving it the knock stopped. No light came on and nothing else was wrong. I towed it is a friend shop that specializes in German cars. We think that it might have been my oil pump finally took a crap. Any thoughts.....

it does sound like the oil pump died or the pick up screen clogged for some reason.i would pull the pan and look for sure.

Temporarily hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge to see if it really has pressure.

I had a simular problem last year after a cam swap and main bearings swap. when i first start the car, the oil pressure with fine. as it warmed up it would slowly go down. by the time i was at temp, at idel it would peg at 0psi but would go up if i reved it.

I posted and ppl said maybe my old pick up fell off.
turned out later after my mains went again that all of my rod beaings had been basically split in two. like there was a huge gauge right down the middle. well as it cam up to temp it just would not hold oil pressure.
that motor is completely gone now and i ended up getting a new one. works 100%

Sounds like what happened when I spun a bearing.

The knocking sound is definately bad.

Someone suggested before using a rubber mallet and banging on the bottom of the oil pan when its empty to see if you hear the pickup tube clunking around in there.

Otherwise hook up a mechanical guage and see if the oil pressure is the same as the electric.

If it is, it very well could be your main bearings.

This is the same prb;em I'm having. I did replace the cam about a month ago. So you guys are thinking that it could be my main bearings?

I think it may be more then the mains, i think your rods could be bad too. My best advise would be to spend 4 hours and pull the motor out before you screww up your crank. take it over to a machine show and have them polish it and make sure its straight. replace ALL mains and rods. this will save you alot of time. I just had my mains replace and it turned out my rods weren't spun, but they were total. not replacing them lead to my mains going AGAIN. $100 fix and your motor is good for anouther 100k miles. justy lots of time. good luck!

I'm going to have the pan pulled (to have a previus leak sealed) and the pump and the mains checked. I'm hoping that I don't have to pull to the motor and get new rod barrings aswell, but you never know.

One more thing to think about: I checked the oil in the car and it is kinda of a grayis color as well an grity . So I think I migth be a barring problem. before I have the pan removed I'm going to change the oil and filter and see if the new oil gets contaminated in the same way to.

Thanks for all your guys help and in put. I love this board and you guys help alot!

If your oil is as you described, I don't see the point of firing it up again. You are going to need to tear it completely apart.
