Unhappy Very disappointed with Flowmaster

Well I've had my new (to me) SS for two days and I've alrerady wasted a good bit of money on it. I had a flowmaster muffler installed at the local Meineke shop and it just sucks. I knew flowmasters droned in mustangs but I heard it was due to the ford 5.0 firing order and they didn't drone in chevys, etc. Well guess what, I can't even listen to the stereo. Gives me a friggin headache. Of course it only does it between 2-2.5K RPM, which just happens to be exactly where you (I) normally drive.

I didn't go with a cat back because mine is already 3 inch pipe from the cats back to the muffler. My car has pipes exiting on both sides and this flowmaster is the same way. Now what do I do, I doubt they would take it back after having been welded in.

I had a 93 LT1 formula with a single OTL exhaust and it sounded awesome, not quite as loud as this flowmaster but a way better, gurgly sound. Can anyone suggest a slightly quieter, but better, more throaty sounding muffler? The stock one I couldn't hear at all. BTW its a 97 SS.

Flowmaster for sale!!

I've been really happy with my Flowmaster. No drone what so ever.

Oh, you got an 80 series eh?

E-Bay!
I have a 91 Formula 350 and a 94 Formula both with no converters and between the 2 I've tried Flowmaster,Dynomax and MAC.Without a doubt MAC is as close to a real dual exhaust sound there is.They use resonators on the tips and it really changes the sound to a tolerable level without the annoying BLAAAT at 2000 rpm.Maybe you could try a couple Pacesetter tips.

Hooker Aerochamber. No drone, quiet at idle and cruise, but talks when you put the foot down.

I have a Dynomax Ultraflow on my car now. I like the way it sounds and it doesn't drone much. I have a single 3" inlet and dual 2 1/2" outlet muffler. It is the same as the SLP 2OTL muffler with dual drivers side exits. So you can keep the stock SS look.

I have the exact same setup as you....and yep, it drones at the RPM's you mentioned. I noticed that the trunk acts like a resonance chamber that just amplifies this. A good (cheap) and somewhat silly fix for your problem is to toss a beach towel (not-really folded) or even better, a pillow, into the trunk on the floor. It will act as a sound deadener and keep the trunk from amplifying the tone of the Flowmaster. Also, be sure your "security panel" on the hatch is up.....it actually cut down a lot on the noise.

Either way.....it will still be 10x louder than stock.....just not as "monotonous" at cruise.

I have headers, no cat and a flowmaster 80 series, with some nice tips out the back. I have heard many many many compliments on this setup, but I still think it is too quiet. It might just be me, but I thought american V-8's were supposed to be load and throaty and announce thier presence. Anyway, I noticed after putting the tips on, that the car was louder outside, but it directed it away from the inside of the car(unlike the turndowns).

Yep.....you're exactly right. I haven't EVER heard anyone tell me that my car doesn't sound beautiful. Personally I LOVE the idle, and then the scream when you push the pedal down.

Thanks everyone for all the opinions. Maybe I'll try the "pillow in the trunk" trick

What do I have to buy to convert this to a 2OTL? It seems to me it should just be a muffler that has one exit on the left and a dual tip? I already have 3" pipe back from the cats, I don't want to pay SLP for a full cat back.

Thanks again.
