So basically going this route is about $750 if I'm adding everything up right ...good lord. Every time I think about whether or not to do heads and cam while doing this rebuild there are a whole set of exponential costs associated with it. My stock opti seems to work fine and has 44K miles. Even though I'm rebuilding it kind of makes sense to me to keep the stock time chain and origninal opti vs chucking out nearly a thousand bucks for a conversion and new 95 opti.

It may be time to sell this car, this stuff is just too much and never ending

ed timing set ~200
opti ~200
cover ~50
vacume hoses ~50

cost of conversion $500 less what you sell your stock opti for.

But unless you plan on reving >6K or are putting in a high lift cam - don't bother maybe replace the stock chain with a new one ~$60

What you may want to invest in is a keyed hub

but yes, it adds up fast

My estimate seems a little more realistic if you consider every little thing needed in that link and are using an LT1 Extreme duty set. .....and where are you guys getting optis for $200?!? I'm looking at Jegs right now and it says $277 for a 95-97 opti. I guess you have to specify that you have a 95+ opti when ordering a cam too hugh? Well...the estimate with the "ed" set sounds a little better. So maybe I could sell the stock opti for $100. BTW, what's an "ed" timing set (edelbrock?). Is this ed set good enough for 6,400 rpm? My car has demonstrated a high rpm miss, it comes and goes though. I have doubts that it's the opti and feel it may be a wire issue....have decided to go with Taylor OTVC wires. I swear though, it seems like with my luck maybe I better do the conversion now rather than getting it back together and then having the stocker fail....then having to cough up $400+ labor for a new 94

Is there any way to upgrade to a better stock type timing set? Like this Lunati set in Jegs for $110 ....would it maybe be 200 rpm better than stock?

Any links/phone numbers for these mysterious people? (I've heard of "dal" before ...lol)

Thanks....

I've decided to go ahead with the opti conversion and an aftermarket cam. I was just bitching when I said it's time to sell.....I can't get what I have in mods now much less what I'll have after the rebuild, I'm married to this freakin' thing...lol, at least I like it.

Hey guys....you dont have to change the opti when switching to a heavy duty timing set do you? I am planning an LT4 timing set when heads and cam...just wondering...

I think this has been covered 3 or 4 times before, yes you must change to vented to run the LT4 set.

You've been on the board for 3 years.... have over 1,500 posts.... and you've never heard of these people, an Extreme Duty timing set, or a vented Opti for ~$200........ ????????????

I've only put 7,000 miles on my car since I've been on this board....so I have had no need to know these things. I guess until I need something I don't even bother finding out about it ....lol. Yes, I had heard of "dal" and an extreme duty set ...just hadn't seen it as "ed". No, didn't know about Jason though. Thanks for the info though Bill.

Kind of seems like I should do it because I'd be upset later on if I had to replace the opti and then decide to do the E.D. and opti ......or .....pay more to just replace the crappy unvented one with another one, and be stuck with a lower duty timing set. The PITA labor to do it then vs now while it's all apart is really the big thing.....especially the way my blower blocks the opti. Also, I can actually get money out of my opti now since it works. Just seems like common sense to do the upgrade.....arggh, more money to spend though. Question: Why is the vented opti actually cheaper?

Likely a supply and demand issue - lots more demand for the unvented one.
