VATS no fuel or no crank?
VATS no fuel or no crank?
If my VATS isnt the right resistance or whatever, will I have no fuel pump or no engine crank or what? I did an Lt1 swap and I have fuel pump but no crank. I dont have a body control mondule which is what the VATS bypass is supposed to be for. Im hoping that the bypass module takes care of my no crank situation.
Re: VATS no fuel or no crank?
There is a fuel cut off for the Vats and also a starter kill. Im not sure how the bypass module works, but you may need to find the reisistance it wants and then wire in a resistor.
I read the description on ebay, if thats the one you are looking at, and it talks like the module takes the place of tuning in the pcm. I deleted the vats in my PCM using LT1 eidt b/c the "eye" that reads the pellet on the key went bad. Deleting it from the PCM alone will not solve the problem b/c the starter kill is still enabled.
But then again if the whole BCM is gone it might not look for the resistance in the key.
So I dunno.
Get the module and try it, its only $25

Re: VATS no fuel or no crank?
Knowing the particulars of the vehicle would be helpful and exactly what was swapped and what is original as well as what is hooked up and what wasn't too.
Be that as it may, I will assume it's OBDI and all is hooked up. If the VATS where causing the no crank condition then the security light would either blink or light steady. If that is the case, you will need to have the original key that went with the theft deterrent module. Here's something you can do to see if it's the VATS system is preventing the theft deterrent relay from pulling in.
CAUTION this will cause your vehicle to start no matter what the position of the clutch or the transmission!!!!!!!
At the theft deterrent relay, put a jumper wire from the yellow wire to the purple wire. If the starter does not crank then, there is another problem. This jumper has completely removed the theft deterrent (VATS) from the starter circuit.
Do not waste your money on some hokey module that you can make yourself for $1.00 at Radio Shack.

Re: VATS no fuel or no crank?
THe original vehicle was a 1995 Firebird 3.4L and I swapped in an Lt1 out of a 96 camaro. I changed all the wiring throughout the car and used 96 Lt1 wiring but the wiring didnt come with that silver Body Control module box. Also its the original igntion switch in the car so I dont think it would work anyways without the vats bypass module. I ordered that module on ebay and got it last night and in the instructions it keeps saying fuel enable wire and thats why I was concerned that VATS shut the fuel pump down not the starter. But I cant see how the pump comes on if I dont have a BCM plugged in if indeed thats what vats is for. Im confused enough.
Re: VATS no fuel or no crank?
Your problem is from not having a BCM.
So do you have fuel pump operation or not? I'm not talking theoretical, but does it actually build up pressure????
Second, if you still have the theft deterrent relay but do not have a BCM, the engine will never crank unless you BYPASS the relay like I mentioned in the earlier post. The BCM is what pulls the relay in. This allows power to the starter solenoid. I suggest AGAIN that you hunt down the theft deterrent relay and jump the yellow to the purple wire. Not the yellow/black wire, the yellow wire.
The relay is located not far from where the BCM would be.

The theft deterrent relay is to the right of the glovebox.
Chuck2: the relay bypass and the module you bought should get you going. You have to do both things.
Re: VATS no fuel or no crank?
I don't have a pic, but I think there is one in one of Brent's (our moderator) alarm writeups. I can assure you it is to the right of the glovebox and the hatch relay is right next to it.
