Valvetrain hardware question?

I plan on putting LE2 heads and a CC503 cam in my 1996 Vette A4.It has dual valve springs springs on the heads now but I dont want to use them cause I think they have to much seat pressure for my application and plus the guy I got them from dont know much about the hardware on the springs.I went and bought some beehive,26918-16 springs. My question is what retainers, locks, seats and shims do I need to get the correct install height? If you have a similar install please tell me about it so I can make a good decision on my setup.Any input would be helpful.......Thanks

Beehive Info

If you want to go with 7 degree hardwarde:

787-16 retainers
648-16 locks
stock or LT4 spring seats

If you want to go with 10 degree hardware (super locks):

795-16 steel retainers, or
794-16 titanium retainers
611-16 locks (standard), or
614-16 locks (+.050)
4705-16 spring seats

Using the 7 degree hardware and stock spring seats you
should end up with an installed height close to 1.78". With
10 degree hardware, 4705-16 spring seats, and the +.050
super locks you should see a 1.75" installed height.

The question doesn't make much sense to me. You need to use shims to set the installed height, it isn't set by choice of other components (unless there isn't enough height and you need plus retainers, etc.). You are really going about it backwards by not starting with the retainers and locks you plan to use and measuring the amount of height you have to work with. Once you know that, you can select springs.

I wouldnt use them if I got them given to me for free. It's just my opinion, but I have seen alot of broken beehives, I cant justify the risk of running them for whatever "gain" they are worth.

Motor vs grams...

Holy crap yea, much better spring. Heavier retainer, but stronger, more durable, and much much safer. That is the spring kit I have been running on my car for the last 3 years with a larger lift cam that you have. I have had many 7000rpm shifts with no spring failures or problems. Those springs are also used on Lloyd Elliot's LE1 heads for his less agressive camshafts. They are good to .600 lift if setup properly.

Good luck getting those springs with Crane out-of-business. S&S cycle bought them but haven't filled all the back orders yet.

Anyway, those springs are an OK choice for the 503 cam. Comp wants 130 #/in seat pressure, these have 120 #/in but that's rated at an installed height of 1.875", not the LT-1 target of 1.78", Comp wants an open pressure of 318 #/in at a compressed height of 1.2", these springs are rated at 394#/in but that's at a compressed height of 1.175 #/in. I'm guessing these springs would be pretty close to spec if they were measured the same way.....

Do you use a different timing set cause I plan on using my stock one and am going to change the chain out. Will those springs put to much pressure on the stock timing set,10308-1?
