Valve Springs?
Valve Springs?
Might be looking to throw a 230/236 XE cam in the old LT1 sometime down the line. Right now I am looking to put in some 1.6 rockers. What springs would I need for this cam and where can I get them for cheap??

I wrote a short "primer" on valve springs that you might find useful. Go to www.kennedysdynotune.com and click on "Tech Tips" in the left hand menu bar. Follow the links to "Valve Spring Tech".

Re: Valve Springs?
how much lift is the cam you are planning? then figure it out for the 1.6 rockers.
just look through the site vendors and match up the lift you need and compatability.
i like my CC 918s
fit stock heads and handle .600" of lift

Re: Valve Springs?
When calculating overall lift how do you take in account for the different ratio rockers. Is it just multiplied by 1.6? I know what the lift of the cam is, but can someone explain how to factor in the rocker arms? As in the math part.
Re: Valve Springs?
would those 987's be too much for a stock cam. I am in need of replacing my springs, when i do my 1.6 rr's would the 987's be a good choice? Those would just drop right in correct or do you need special seats since they are a double spring?
Re: Valve Springs?
I used 987s with the same exact cam and they worked great. Although they may have been a bit stiff and ive seen most people have went to the 986s with that cam. The benifit of the 986s is that the diameter is small enough so it will fit in the factory lt1 head's spring pocket whereas im pretty sure the 987s won't (that wasn't an issue to me cuz i was using them in AFR heads and the pockets were already large enough in diameter.
Both of these springs i believe will require a new set of spring seats,

Re: Valve Springs?
I am looking at this same issue (picking valve springs). I have CM612's but I am scared to use them because the string of trouble they have had lately. The cam I have is a 224/236 and the machinist doing my heads recommended 987's. Anyone running a 224/236 want to chime in with what they are running and pros / cons?
Re: Valve Springs?
The 987s do require either machining the seat pockets in the head or just simply grinding on the locators till they sit flat. The 987 spring really isnt any larger than the stockers OD but the locators that you are supposed to use with them have an oversized OD which will hit in a couple spots on the head. I cant say much about the 986s but I would be afraid of valve float with anything less than the 987s. Don't have any problems running them with stock lifters either with my 224/230 and a friend of mine ran stockers with his 230/236 just fine. Before I installed the cam, I installed the springs and 1.6 RRs.
Re: Valve Springs?
Man I was hoping for some better news.
So the 986's won't work with that cam? I was really looking to go ahead and get a set of 1.6 rockers and buy the springs to put on for now. In several months then I was going to pick up that cam and not have to do so much work.
