Question valve spring compressor

Which valve spring compressor do you guys use? I found one at pep boys, it looks like a pair of locking plyers (red handle) and squeezes like a plyer. Problem with that was it did not hold the inner valve spring.

I am told the pry bar tool is very nice, linked below. But i am concerned with it fitting under the cowl towards the rear of the engine. Has anyone ever used this?

Re: valve spring compressor

That's the old simple type compressor. Don't see how that is going to fit under the cowl.

Re: valve spring compressor

I used a basic screw-style spring compressor with no problems, and I did the job with the heads on the car. I think it cost a whopping $20. Even works on dual valvesprings (which I used on my motorcycle).

Re: valve spring compressor

I used one that looks like a big c clamp with an air hose hook up. Very cool, I was done in like 15 minutes. Course I did my springs with the heads off the car in a shop.

Re: valve spring compressor

I highly recommend the Moroso spring compressor for about $80. It is the best and easiest to use. It will work with dual springs and will work with the heads on the engine in an f-body. I own three different types of spring compressors and the Moroso is far superior design.

http://www.mytoolstore.com/kd/kdengi13.html#3271 I used a tool much like the 3271 shown here worked great, not sure if it would work right with dual springs.

Crane has one just like that, that just came out a little bit ago. Jegs has them listed for $105

Re: valve spring compressor

I personally used a $30 screw-type compressor from O'Reilly's -- with the heads still on the car (like what 96capricemgr posted). I honestly dont know how else you can reach the rearmost springs. However, since mine kept slipping off of the inner spring (I installed dual valvesprings), I simply modified a large washer to sit on the longer arm of the compressor -- which would then reach-thru to hold the inner spring better. Worked just fine for me, though there may be better methods.

The compressors posted by Teke and 1fastlt1 look like a snazzy idea. Too bad it's so expensive -- that'd make the install process go considerably faster.
