Not for anything, but 14.91 in a V8 Formula? There are V6's that run that and better all day long. I noticed you are way above sea level, but still...You have a good MPH. For you to say "get the V8 or you'll regret it" is a bit ludicrous when you are barely breaking into the 14's with yours. I dunno, I guess I'm not the norm here, because we are talking stock vs. stock. But personally, I wouldn't trade my car for a V8 unless it was running the same or faster than my 6. I've learned a lot about cars by taking a smaller displacement motor and working with it. I guess the same can be said for the V8 also, but then I look at it this way: there's no better feeling than beating bigger displacement cars at the track. Plus, I view my car differently now...because it's modified. It all depends on what your plans are with the car....are you going to commute and drive daily with it or store it away in the winter and race it on occasion. I like all fbodies and I LOVE seeing people do different things with them looks-wise and performance-wise. I'd say... Get what you can afford and work with it whether it's an 8 or 6.

Read the whole sig. I'm over a mile above sea level! Do you realize that stock V6's run low 16's and LS1's run mid 14's here all the time. You are always about a second slower up here at high altitude. You should first realize the what altitude will do to the car before you say anything. Plus now, with just slight mods I beat an E46 M3 which ran 14.0 here. But I'll agree with Shirl and Will84 the tread is old and the bickering needs to stop.

I remember this kid in town that had a 2000 3.8L Manual... He would spout off his mouth occasionally about how his "newer" car was faster..and I had an Auto. One day he was ahead of me leaving town... we were going about 40 and the road turned into highway... then I saw the puff... as he went WOT...and I followed suit... then I signalled ... and passed him while he was WOT. buh buh 3.8L.

Sorry had to.... anyways.. depends on who you are..and what YOUR going to be happy with. I would personally never be happy with a car that is this heavy and only had 200hp. My fbody is totalled now and im looking at a GTP or something else... If Im going to have a V6 powered car...I want it to actually move.. and if I was going to spend money for V8 insurance...I wouldnt want to have a V6.. you know? Just do what will make you happy.. Good luck.

Man, go with the V-8.
Shop around and get one with as low miles as possible. I got a 94Z in 1999 with 36,000 miles on it...Im on 90,000 now, no problems, not one! Shop around, there are some really good deals begging to be found and ANY LT1 can be made super fast! But even stock they are fast compared to 99% of cars you will pass.....safely.
Love the Fbody and the wisdom on this Site!

This thread is just screaming, "LOCK ME! LOCK ME!" If it stays open, I'd be interested to see how many different ways people can say the same thing.

Less than $400

That would be nitrous

I'm really not going to bother with this. It has been discussed many times.

I think a v8, be it LT1 or LS1 is WAY too much power for a 16-18 yr old.

I have my v6.
I am happy with it
It has seen 33 mpg
I HAVE a V8 in my 72 chevelle, but I have MUCH more fun with the bird
I have been VERY tempted to pick up an LT1 as just a daily driver

Dude, don't even talk you are an a$$hole, your v6 was gay, and I bet your ls1 is gay, and your mechanic is dumb. You are one of those guys who thinks, throw money at a car and it will be fast, if its not fast throw more money and it shoudl be faster...

For the record, I was the one that ran 14.467@95.45 mph on the facotry original tires with 36k miles on them and only free mods, and the only weight reduction was jack and spare, on a non-Y87 equiped 3.8L Camaro with 5-speed. I am a bit of an exception, since I seem to just propel 5-speed v6s down the track with some speed

I have owned 3 v6 f-bodies... They are not the greatest things ever, but they have their perks. Sure I want a V8, but the cars I was looking at locally were lt1s with 100kish for $5-6,000. Don't full yourselves you all know high mileage lt1s are not reliable, and I woudl be buying an older car with many dirvers that likely abused the car.

my 3.4L went 130,000 miles before I sold it, more drivetrain problems then one can imagine, mostly due to my agressive driving, agressive enough to break a torque arm and many other drivetrain pieces, I had some 350+ passes in that car and it still started up purred and made its power on the day I sold it(just needed tires, brakes, tranny rebuild again, and interior wiring was messed up do to a break in) The guy I sold it to if he ever rebuilt the tranny I could probably run that thing to 15.5s all day(ran a best of a 15.4) but he has plans for a turbo 3.8 buick motor.

I need a reliable car being in school, when I got rid of that car I was once again in the market for a new car, I looked at ls1s and nice lt1s for months and months and months... around hear seems moset low mileage ls1s are in the $17-22k range... and for that price I coudl get a new '03 Stang GT, with a warranty. I looked at older ls1s was finding 98-00 with 50-70k for like $10-12k. I was not going to spend $10-12k on a car that has 3/4s its life gone(I consider sports cars to last 100k before I have to start dumping serious money into them(trannies)).

Then came across my '00 3.8L v6, 32k miles pristine fully loaded for $10k KBB or $12,500

I am in school, I need something that is reliable, but I am a car guy I want to have fun in my cars...

whats my v6 offers...
-decent looks(or so I think )
http://www.mustangeater825.50megs.co...s/IMG_0197.JPG
(I put the ZR1s on righ tafter I hit my times)
-decent power(When I ran my best of a 14.5, it was agianst a modded pre99 GT that lighted me by .2, but I caught up, passed and put lenghts lenghts on him and his 15.4 run)
My car has a midrange, unlike most 4 bangers which makes driving fun.
Ran a best of this
60' 2.117
330 6.027
1/8 9.299
mph 75.37
1000 12.103
1/4 14.467
mph 95.45
Before you add the perfect conditions crap... here is a thread from an lt1 guy on the same night. Don't focus on his times but his and everyone elses comments on the track.
http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...hreadid=213452

-Car has decetn reliability... much newer and less miles then a car I can afford...

I figure, once I graduate(I am in school if I wasn't I woudl be driving a GT now cuz I woudl have been able to afford the payments without killing myself)) I will have this car paid off and I figure I can sell it in 1-2 years and maybe be worth $8-9k, about $3k-4k less then what it was worth when I bought in November... Car is treated nicely and zaionoed.

-Car comes with a manual tranny
I like to drive car, not just steer it.
Not many cars these days come with them, I wish GTPs were rWD and manual trannies I would be all over those

We know v8s are faster we are not dumb. And you are dumb if you think a Lt1 is a "reliable car"

The newest lt1 is 7 years old, older f-bodies are not known for "reliability" Its not so much the fact that its an lt1 but the fact its older.

I know I am not the fastest but lets face it, I go to the track to beat myself, maybe others at my level. Not to be king of hte hill. I am a college student and personally I think I am very very well to do for a college student, no loans other then a car loan, that will be paid off relatively quickly, but I cannot afford to have a full out race project or to have an unreliable car. And at the track the king of the hill are generally some of the guys with the most money. There will aways be someone faster then you.

As for it being a learner car, definitely, I almost killed myself numerous times in all 3 of my v6s form 2.8L, to 3.4L, to now 3.8L and if I had a high powered v8 woudl have been dead easily by now.

I think RS Dragster was the one that quoted me on this but I am saying it again...

"I use my big Johnson to compensate for my v6 "

sorry for the long rant...

but the whole v6 vs v8 thing is dumb... straight line v8 is faster. But fastest car is not always most important thing.

....but I am sure alot of you will not understand this(as alwasy) and continue to call my v6 a nutless car that doesn't deserve to be on the road...

I guess you might be right, next time I cannot afford a v8 f-body, I should have just buy the a cheaper competitor, like the v8 stang, or even a import with a turbo and probably gotten the f-body discontinued years ago.

my only one opinion is, my 1st car was a 92 Chevy Silverado with the 350 engine...i thought that thing was fast when i took the air filter off, it made it sound mean...i use to take that truck racing all the time out to weshtimer ( hosuton) and well, i pulled up to a RS camaro, and HOLY crap, he smoked me bad and i had a v8 and he had a v6 and it was all stock...but had that truck for about 3months got too mant tickets in it..speeding, offroading in parks, donuts, etc, etc, also it has the posi rear end and i would do burn outs everywhere i went...but now i own the car in my SIG and i love the car...actually this is my second camaro, Drunk driver wrecked into my other one..sued him and got this car plus some MODDING...well get a V8......v6 is nothing, all the girls at my school drive a v6 and its funny, id rather drive a GEO b4 i drive a v6 maro..cuase maro's suppose to be fsat cars, not no slow POS 6 banger.....so V8 > V6 in my opinion...but 7grand for a 93 bird...heck no..i got my car and its a 95 for 6,500 with only 69k miles on it...find a btter deal, try driving down to the US and find a car and bring it back to canada....

I know its been said in this post , if you want to mod a car dont waste your time with a v6 , unless you have an unlimited budget b/c i've seen some pretty fast 6ers but they have had a ton of money put into em. save up and get whatever you can afford and have fun with it. good luck

If you're just turning 16, a V6 wouldn't be a bad idea for you. They're not as slow as everyone makes them out to be, they're fast enough to get you in trouble, but don't expect to get the "Ooohs" & "Aaahhhs" you would get w/ a V8.

My first car was a 1990 Plymouth Sundance with a 90hp 4cyl (that had almost no comprsesion in cyl 1) and a 3spd auto. That thing was slower than frozen turds (0-60 in 18seconds flat). When I was 19 I bought a 96 V6 because I couldn't afford the Z28 and that car was awesome to me at the time.... but I always wanted the V8. It gave me something to look forward to, and when I got the LS1 this fall (at the age of 24) I respected it more, and had nearly 10 years of driving experience under my belt, so I can better handle the 350ftlbs of torque that monster puts out. If I had this car at the age of 16 I'd be dead.

My advice: Don't give a flying f*ck what other people think/say/do. Get what you want and can afford, enjoy it, and move on when you can afford more.

-Mike
