A v6 just is NOT a good idea.

It's a fine car yes, is it a good first car? No. It's too nice to be abused but not nice enough to want to keep ESPECIALLY when you know there's an identical car out there with an additional two cylinders that runs a full second faster (at a minimum) - if you know ANYTHING about drag racing a full second is a HUGE difference.

If you really think you can manage to not kill yourself in a fast car and you think you can take the time to maintain it (mechanically and cosmetically) and you think you can afford it then OK.. do it.. really.. just be honest with yourself.

If you honestly think that maybe such a car is not a good idea for where you are in your life right now then that's great too. This doesn't mean you should buy a v6 though.. I mean you're throwing money away.. a car is a losing investment, the only way you can even come close to breaking even is if you keep that vehicle for a good while and maintain it well.. with a v6 I *know* you will want to upgrade.. there's simply no arguing about that. Then you just blew a bunch of money on a decent but not great car that you will want to sell not far down the road. And besides the insurance on the v6 car's is a crime.. it's hardly different from the v8's - if a v8 is not for you then get a car with decent insurance rates that's RELIABLE and AFFORDABLE - this just is not the v6 fbody any way you slice it.

I'll put my flame suit on now.. have a nice day everyone!

The V8 LT1 just felt too clunky, not as robust or responsive

I simply didnt like the feel of the car, Their are many reasons to buy a Camaro, they made 3 models for that reason, I wasnt shoping Z28's and Vette's at the time, I was looking Monte Carlo SS, GTP, I knew I was shooting for a V6 and after driving the LT1 I went back and drove the 3.8 again and decided on that.

I'm not cheep, At the time money was more an issue being 18, now I'm not on such a budget.

Read exactly what I quoted and think about it..You claim an LT1 was not as "robust or responsive" as a v-6.. Now that is comedy.. If you do not find the humor in that, then I am sorry. I never said you were cheap, but since you brought it up, it seems you have a complex about it.

You are personally way biased. Not everyone wants a V8 or wants to drag race. You cannot make a blanket statement that no one should buy a V6. That ludicrous.

Obviously, you don't "*know*" what everyone wants to do with their car. To presume such a thing is nothing more than an ego trip.

well if i were you i'd go for the 95 and up z ( or if you dare a 96 97 ss ) but about the insurance, i dont know if your parents would go for this but mine did. if both your mom and dad have flawless driving records, then it wouldnt matter who but in most cases have your MOM on the insurance as PRIMARY driver, just because females are cheaper to insure. that would knock your insurance down alot! thats how i did mine when i was 17, my full coverage insurance was only like 60 per month with a 250 deductable, way cheaper than you as primary driver.

Responsive I'm talking about something to throw around the road, I LOVED the torque of the LT1, it was a blast down shifting and laying down the gas, I'm going to talk to my friends mom and see if she'll let me drive her car soon cuz it was fun, but that was it's best quality. I didnt want manual at the time, LS1's were out of my price range, LT1's always had the opti+ poor fuel milage, and after that initial drive I went back and bought the V6.

well if you ask me it has to do with peronality, when I was 16 I bought my z and with in two weeks i had the car on jacks with all the mods listed below goin in. two years later(now) I have a 383 stroker in the works (sitting in the garge). If you want performance you go with a 8 cylinder theres no sub for displacement. As for the 6 cylinder my friend has one I like it alot great gas milage, gets up a goes okay. but basicly is mainly a looks car all muscle looks and no go. So you basicly want to decide what intentions you have with the car.

So how you calling me out then? -weak-

I didn't love the 3.4L, I loved the Camaro...I LOVE my LS1, and my Camaro again. The 3.4L was a nice V6, but as I stated, modding it is not worth the cash at all.

the V6's are nice cars..i say for a 16 year old that is definately a nice way to go insurance/trouble wise. my moms 99 firebird is a v6. those things are plenty quick. if i had a 3800 II when i was 16 i would have gotten in alot of trouble much less if i had a v8. i know alot of v6 fbody owners and all they do is bitch and whine because they dont have a v8. personally, i'd say look into another car for awhile then pick up a nice LS1 a few years down the road when they are cheap.

If you have the self-control too keep your foot out of it, I would say get the V8. Myself, I have had three fast cars since I turned 16, a built 68 Cougar, 300ZX Twin Turbo with slight mods, and my Formula. I wan't very careful with my driving record, and got my licence suspended. I got 4 tickets within 4 months (2 w/ 300zx and 2 w/ formula) that was right after I turned 17. I'll tell you, it is a wake up call. After that I have not been pulled over in a year since my last ticket, and I am a much more cautious driver. I wouldn't say that the trouble would be control (wrecking0 because of age (I can out drive almost anybody on the road and keep myself out of the situations that cause problems ie control the car) but the trouble comes with not speeding. My advice is to buy the V8 and just learn to be smart, because if you buy a V6 you'll always regret not getting a V8
