Using oil priming tool to prime motor...

I am not sure what I am to look for. Prefilled the oil filter but I expected a bit of oil to come out of my lifters and out of my rods but nothing.

Primed using a drill and the tool for about 30 seconds and nothing. Oil would surge up to the level of the lifter chamber as seen through the oil pump gear hole but nothing else.

What should I be looking for or how should I do this correctly?

I don't think you will see anything come out of the lifters, especially after only 30 seconds. Just run it a few times. You should notice that the pressure picks up quickly on subsequent primings as opposed to the first time you primed it. You should always use some of your new oil to pour over the valvetrain before you button up the covers.

A run-of-the-mill drill doesn't have enough power to drive the oil to the top of the engine. I've used one of those industrial sized right angle drills on high speed and it barely dribbled out of the oil ports on my rockers. You should be fine for what you saw.
