Untuned ecu = red hot cats?
Untuned ecu = red hot cats?
Hi,
Rebuilt my 97 camaro engine a few months ago and added a a bigger cam and ported heads. The previous engine had an LT4 hotcam kit which was tuned with 26lb injectors. Planning to upgrade the injectors to about 36lb and get this tuned eventually.
I'm noticing that the cats glow red with the current configuration. Is this due to the engine running lean or rich? Or is this just what to expect when running a bigger cam and ported heads?
The cam i'm running is a cc306, both of the cats are magnaflow.
Thanks,

I gotta chime in.If your cats are glowing, this can burn your car to the ground. They must be clogged or something. This is a very serious thing happening to your car.I hope a moderator chimes in here.If not,do a search. If you park your car in the garage, you could burn the house down.It should make your car run sluggish or not run at all. This is a very important issue.STOP NOW.Get it checked.My02.
Re: Untuned ecu = red hot cats?
Unclear.... you are running ported heads/CC306/26#/Hr Accel injectors without a tune.
In addition to the ability to burn your car to the ground, you are probably flooding the engine with fuel, diluting the oil, damaging the rings, and about to wipe out the bearings. The cam overlap is probably blowing intake air through into the exhaust, the PCM is seeing lean exhaust, and it's pouring in fuel the engine doesn't need. The fuel plus the blow through oxygen is burning on the cat, and about to melt it.
Your parts choices in and of themselves are prone to problems. The Accel injectors and the Aeromotive AFPR are known to cause problems.
Park it until you can get it tuned.

The AFPR when I first got it was faulty. It ended up leaking and I ended up taking it apart and tightening everything down. That was about 8yrs or so ago, hadn't had any probs with it since.
