Unplugged MAF, car dies...

Hi.

I've been having some intermittent miss/surge/rich-running problems. I changed out the Opti 3 months ago, which was definitely bad, but now these problems have recurred. I tore it apart the other day (I'm getting good at this! ), as there was heavy rain recently, but there was no indication at all of moisture damage in the opti. So I put it all back together.

One minute it runs better than ever, then the next minute it'll barely move. At first, this only occured when warmed up, and after heavy load/high RPMs, but now it shows symptoms when cold.

So to my question... I tried searching the forums, but couldn't find a clear answer on what is supposed to happen when the MAF is disconnected...
I noticed in my troubleshooting that my engine dies immediately when I disconnect it. What would cause this, considering that this is abnormal? Also, is this related to my problem?

Any advice would help.

Thanks,
Tom

Its normal for the car to stall when you unplug the MAF sensor. It should fire right back up and run fine with it unplugged. I would go ahead and unplug the MAF for a while and see if that clears up some of your symptoms. Your fans will run constantly so you might want to only try this for a day or 2 so you dont run the risk of burning them up. You must drive for more than 5 miles at a time to make sure the engine gets up to opporating temps before you can decide if unplugging the MAF helped.
