Underdrive pulley question?????

I have the G2 underdrive pulley on my car, and I have to use the stock crankshaft pulley as the harmonic balancer.

in my opinion the pulley pulls too much power my battery readings are REALLY LOW when i come to stop.

can i put my stock belt around the stock pulley and run it that way, leaving the underdrive pulley on, and then use the short belt and the underdrive pulley, only at the track????\

will this throw something off????

Nope, can't run a belt cockeyed like that. I had the March underdrive pulley and overdrive alternator pulley, I didn't really have a problem, except with the power steering going away at idle with the stock cam.

I threw in the CC306 and idled up to 800 rpm and the problem went away. If you wanted to, you could increase your idle if you've got a programmer, or get some PCMforLess tuning done?

Hmm I have the same issue with the power steering going out at idle with the march pullies. I thought my power steering pump was shot. Oh well.

gsdz28: What kind of amperage is your alternator putting out? With the March pullies mine puts out 14.2 volts.

You might have whoever did your tuning up your idle to 650 or 700 and see if that helps at stop lights.

It also might be that your alternator is on the way out and isn't charging as much as it should. :dunno: Just throwing out ideas.

my car has a cam so it is set to idle at 900.

I guess the alternator could be it, but this didn't start happening until i put the pulley on so........

Why not change the alternator pulley to correct the issue? My March system came with both pulleys to prevent this problem. Of course, you'll need to get the right belt too.

wow I put the under drive pulley on my 96 crank and left the stock one off the directions were, bad. with mine i've put a few thousand miles on and well I just blew my opti rotor apart at high rpm. Maybe I need a balancer?
as far as charging or p/s I have no issues there.

What kind of underdrive pulley do you have? March supplies longer bolts for bolting on the balancer and underdrive pullies since they piggy-back one another. So you left off the balancer??? From what I understand that can cause a good deal of damage. If I'm not mistaken, the LT1 crank is externally balanced on both sides by the balancer and flywheel.

do yourself a favor and take that thing off, as well as any other G2 product u have on it. ASP makes a VERY good underdrive pulley for our cars

Yes, you need the damper to prevent damage to the crankshaft due to harmonic vibrations. The vibrations cause rotational "twist" in the crankshaft. But the damper/pulley on an LT1 is NOT a balancer. All external balance is provided by the weight on the flywheel/flexplate. The stock damper is neutral balanced, although alledgedly, in extreme cases of factory imbalance, they use the holes in the stock damper for a minor trim.

Do NOT run the engine without a damper. Your crank will not be happy.

I bought it from E-bay for 50 thought it was a deal! If I use longer bolts and reinstall balancer I should be good? I already found the belt that works with it and have no other problems. Thanks for your replies.
