Turning a Flywheel - Minimum Thickness?

Does anyone know how many times an LT1 stock flywheel can be turned (resurfaced); or what the min thickness spec is?

I posted this in the drivetrain forum, but didn't get any replies ....

Re: Turning a Flywheel - Minimum Thickness?

With some delicate searching it can be found on here, I have found it before but don't remember how.

I prob would say no more than 3 times. But it depends on how much/little is removed. Maybe more times if its a very little.

I am having release problems right now because mine is too thin. This moves the flywheel/PP/Clutch further to the front of the car, while the belhousing/slave are in the same place. Can't push the PP far enough away so I am going to grind down the little adapter that offsets the slave.

I believe that GM does not suport turning them at all.

Due to the condition of mine it had to be replaced with a new piece.

There are a few threads on it.

Re: Turning a Flywheel - Minimum Thickness?

Thanks for the info guys.

The problem I'm having is, sometimes the car will chatter so bad taking off in 1st, the rear end starts bouncing up and down; enough that the tranni feels like it's hitting the bottow of the car. Other times, the car is smooth as can be.

I recently installed a McCleod clutch disc (7200 shift one), reused the stock flywheel (which had been turned once before) and got a used spec pressure plate from a friend. I took a resurfacing bit to both the flywheel and pressure plate using my die grinder. I hit them just enough to remove any surface rust, etc ....

I suppose I am going to have to take the tranni back out and have the flywheel checked huh? I just can't understand why this problem only shows up under certain circumstances.

Mine does the same. This disk hold hard but doesn't seem to like the stock style PP.

How many miles you have on it so far? Mine chatters very little now, but doesn't release well. @ 1500 miles on it.

Re: Turning a Flywheel - Minimum Thickness?

I haven't put many miles on it, maybe 300-500?

Is your problem intermittent? Mine seems to only do this when it's hot or humid outside. I'm using a spec pressure plate, but have an SLP PP in the garage I may put on.

I just ordered a new flywheel, and will swap it out and put the SLP PP on instead of the Spec. I hope this will fix it up .... I hesitate to call what I'm experiencing 'Chatter', because I've never felt clutch chatter to this degree. Sometimes, it feels like the tranni is going to come through the floor of the car!
