Tune on a stock car - any point?

My 1996 Z28 A4 is basically stock. Has a CAI and I just put the 160 thermostat in it. The fans have been reprogrammed but that is about it.

Is there any point in getting a tune done on the car? There is a shop here that is more than capable but I don't want to waste the money if it won't provide any performance gains.

I plan on keeping the car stock for now.

Correct tune on a totally stock engine will gain 10-15HP. This is done by leaning out the target A/F ratio in power enrichment mode (~WOT). Stock programming produces a target of about 11.7:1, tune can optimize in the range of 12.8-13.2:1. With your 160* t'stat, you could also see additional gains with a bit of timing advance.

Have you done the throttle body coolant bypass? That's worth ~6HP.

I forgot he also has a dyno of the Hypertech 160* + Power Program.

Re: Tune on a stock car - any point?

Fred, thanks for the info.
I am trying to squeeze everything I can out of this car without opening up the motor or doing headers.
I will do the bypass next.

I am going to reprogram the car when I can do a before and after. It won't be at a track or on a dyno but I have an old G-Tech kicking around I can use for very basic comparison. I don't care about accuracy just A & B difference.
