tune or don't tune? what do you guys think?

Ok here is the deal if you don't know or remember i have an 88 mazda rx7 that i put an LT1/A4 in orignally! so after the auto tranny getting on my nerve i went to a t56. so i put it in and the exhaust shop blew my R. So i sent it off to 6speed inc and now i have a brand new tranny. So i had my pcm tuned from pcm for less a while back when it was auto. So i am currently running the bin for an A4 setup. i have tuner cat and the data cable but i dont want to mess to much with the pcm. (i guess i should say i am scared of breaking it)

So my question is should i have my dyno tuned, or just download the M6 bin into my pcm and call it a day?

i can tell you that my motor seems to be running really rich, but from what i understand the lt1's run richer in the higher rpms settings.

as for my mods, all i have are long tube headers and true dual exhaust. air intake also.

here is why i am asking really about tuning my car. I shopped around some local places to get my car dyno tuned. no one around me has the software to tune my pcm. As soon as i told them that i have the data cable and the software, they said "o ok then we can use your laptop, your data cable" so i said ok so how much. one told me $500 and another told me $350. for some reason i have a problem paying that much for them using my software and my pc. what about you guys? or is that normal??

I would laugh at them for quotes like that using your own equipment.

i honestly cant answer the poll... i personally would do both if i had the money to spare... but i wouldnt pay that much for the shop guys to use your stuff, but if you feel brave enough you could do the tune yourself...

I thought that the M6 tune wasn't any different from an A4 tune, except maybe the idle parameters. Even my M6 tune has shift points and such programmed in, but since there isn't any auto tranny, then it just ignores those. Someone else probably knows better.

If you have the M6 file, why not just "Program" the pcm using it and be done?
If you want to try the current A4 bin, just turn off the the A4 option in the "ECM Switch" table then reprogram.

It's very easy to do. I would laugh at any shop that claims to be a performance shop if they were going to charge that much and not even have the equipment... For simple changes like that I charge $25 or less depending on the issue at hand if the car is brought to me, it takes less than 10 mins to do.

I'd be happy to look at your file, but I'm not sure what you're wanting to compare in the switch table, its either on or its off.. You can use the TC "Compare" bin feature to compare the A4 tune to the M6 file to see if there are any differences in the main timing tables.
I don't know if they are different or not stock, but I'm thinking they may be because of the load differences at different rpms since a convertor softens the load until the stall speed is met.
