Lower grade gas should just retard your timing no?
Well, it could do a number of things....

but, if you check your owners manual, it says to use no less than 89 octane.....i.e. - mid-grade......
but, I'm also sure that using 87 on a stock engine won't hurt anything.

I've used 87 octane the last couple of months, and haven't noticed any difference at all. No pinging, no loss of power.

I really should only use premium though.

The way I understand it is- if you use some lower octane gas and the PCM detects knock, it will back off on some timing until you add more gas. When the fuel level goes up the PCM will bring some more timing back in. I guess it assumes that if your engine is pinging you got some bad gas, and when you fill up again it assumes it's good gas.

I don't remember where I heard this, but it sounds right to me.

I thought that was only in LS1's?

Ive switched back and forth before, and never noticed a difference between 89 and 91. Ive only used 91 since I moved to Texas though. I used to live in the Monterey, CA area, and saw some pretty high gas prices there. Gas is much cheaper here. I feel sorry for those CA people, Im glad I moved here though.

you americans complaining about gas well you guys would die if you lived in canada. right now $0.86 a liter yes a liter for regular. 4 liters equals 1 gallon. do that math lol. $3.44 for a gallon of regular. so think about that before you complain about $1.80 a gallon LOL

Maybe I should build up my 383 with like 8.5:1 compression and run 87 octane... 400rwhp at the same time?

I don't know how it would like it with a 224/230?

Premium gas (91 octane) around here goes for $0.959/litre. Filling from empty costs me about $50. I can't believe you guys complain about paying $30 to fill your cars.

Yeah, but your dollar is worth about 67 cents to us....so really, your paying about the same thing.....unless, of course, your paying for your gas in american dollars in Canada.....
