Thumbs down Tried some midgrade fuel instead of premium, yikes!!!

Ok first off, I know to use premium. The car has not had a single tank of anything but premium since I bought it. For some reason the other night I decided that I would try a tank of mid grade(quite a bit cheaper) and just drive like a grandma. I am so sick of paying $1.85/gallon for gas around here, and money was getting a little tight. Anyhoo, on to what happened-

I had been driving like a grandma I decided to punch it once from a roll on the interstate. It felt good at mid range RPMs, but at about 5k she started pinging REAL bad. I looked behind me as soon as it started pinging and there was a big cloud of smoke behind me, lol. I guess when the knock sensor picked up some detonation it richened up the fuel and retarded the spark some. The car fell flat on it's face!!! I may go buy some octane boost tomorow

I had pretty much the same results with mine once when I accidently put in some mid grade fuel. As far as gas prices go, $1.85 isn't that bad, its $1.79 for regular here, and premium right now is $1.97!

Tried some 87 before. Couldn't even go up the slightest hills or accelerate too fast or my engine would ping really bad.

and premium right now is $1.97!
Wow... That must be nice

It's rounding $2.10 here for premium last time I drove past the station saturday.

I'll still stick with the premium though, although I guess the increased price and increased mpg all about even it out -- who knows though till ya try it!

Use mid-grade all the time in the Z, and never have a problem with pinging or anything.....seems to work just fine.....

Have run at the track with 91 and 89 and had no difference in results...

Ive used 89 a few times when the car was still stock, never had any problems, but then again, I rarely went WOT with it. I've lucked out on gas since we own a farm and buy 93 in bulk for all the vehicles and equipment

When my buddy bought his car the dealership used 87 octane in it all the time.

Seemed a tad slow.

After a few tanks of premium we Gteched it and it seemed normal.

Lower grade gas should just retard your timing no?
