transmission shop problem

I am having my transmission rebuilt by a shop per a "moser 12 bolt warning" post I put up earlier. I feel like I am being ripped off bad!!!!!! My car is a 94 Z28 with the 4l60e tranny

They are rebuilding my transmission but my casing is cracked at the tail and the bell housing per the shop. They are doing a master rebuild kit with a new casing and new torque converter. They also took care of the driveshaft shortening issue. They cut it down a inch, rebalanced, new yoke on end that was cut and new u joints by their machine shop they use.

All this with labor and tax comes to about 2550. I think that is high!!!!! I see I could of went to netgearhead.com and had a new stage II performance tranny installed with a higher stall TC and custom fit driveshaft for about the same price.

They are charging me the 250 dollar core charge! WHY IS THIS? Can someone explain? According to my mechanic friend, they should not charge this unless a swap of the transmission was done. I am paying for a new housing in this bill. Does anyone have a clue why they would charge a core for my tranny being rebuilt with a new casing? Any feedback on this issue would be greatly appreciated! I pick the car up tommorow so I need some good tip and tools on making my point on the core charge and the general expensive cost of the transmission!

I appreciate all the feedback from everyone on this board! You guys RULE!

Thanks,

I would ask about the $250 core charge if you also paid for a new case. You could have saved a few bucks doing your own leg work, but this way only one shop is involved so there is no questions if you have any warrenty issues.

They probably charged a core charge because yours was cracked. This means they can't rebuild it so they had to scrap it. Kind of like when you buy a starter, they charge a core until the rebuildable one comes back, if it's damaged, you don't get your core charge back. However, paying for a new case and a core for your old one seems like they're double dipping. Unless they had to use one of their cores, instead of buying one from a dealer. I'd ask how the back and front of the trans. got cracked. I could see an out of balance prop taking the tailshaft out but you should have felt something. I know from experience, dropping a trans on the tail when removing it can crack it. Good luck

If you paid for a new case and a core charge, that is wrong. It would be like charging you twice for the same thing.

Well I knew that the tail housing was in bad shape. It Blew out driving with a loud pop. As per my "moser 12 bolt warning" post the cause was the driveshaft too long putting too much pressure on the tail housing and there was a loud band when I hit bumps. I dont doubt the tail housing was completely shot as well as the bell housing feeling the brunt of this failure.
