Transmission Fluid and headers spell disaster

This post has a dual purpose. The first is to warn everyone that doesn't know that transmission fluid is not safe around headers. I realize everything will burn if you get it hot enough but never thought transmission fluid would ignite when it comes in contact with hot headers.

I had the car out running for about 20 mins, brought it back to the garage and shut it down. I heard a hissing from the transmission dipstick so I pulled it out and transmission fluid shot out of the tube and leaked all over the new pacesetter headers. Imediatly the fluid ignited and I had a fiire blazing off the headers. Luckily I was able to blow it out before it melted anything. (Makes me wonder how many car fires start this way)

I know the transmission does not have too much fluid in it and I believe that the vent tube may be plugged causing pressure to build and blow fluid out the dipstick tube. Does this sound about right? Or is there something else that could cause this.

Thanks

are you running the stock torque converter? if not what stall and do you have a tranny cooler or temp gauge? i could see something being plugged up maybe causing this but i would think that heat would be the # 1 cause for this. if you have a high stall and were out beating the **** out of her for a half hour your tranny could get really hot. i know first hand. i took my neighbor for a ride and did about 5 holeshots in a row and welded my tranny together (it only had about 2500 miles on it too which sucks) big stall, no cooler and no gauge to keep an eye on things. my car was somewhat warm from driving home from work, but after i heated it up, it decided to lock up in my drive way and i had to drag it to my garage with my truck because the motor didnt have enough power to move the car.
