I am thinking of getting a level3 rebuild from him and was wondering on others experience with him. Also, I don't want harsh shifts, I just want a tranny that will last. Is a level 3 necessary or would a 2 handle about 400 for a good amount of time?

The best thing would probably be to email dave directly from his site lt1dave.com I'm sure he would willing to answer any question you might have.
From what I understand the level is a real neck jerker, a level 2 would probabaly handle 400 hp easily. I live local to him and have talk to several people that have tranny work done by him and have good things.

I am currently using the stage 3 which shifts pretty hard. Some others with stage 3 will bark the tires on the 1-2 shift at minimal throttle. I think you can change how firm they shift with line pressure, but not sure on that point.

Shoot him an email and see what he has to say.
EDIT: the stage 3 obviously isnt in the camaro, its in a 383 Imp SS, just editing this so it doesnt look dumb.

I have Dave's "level 2.5" transmission. I started out with a level 3 tranny about six months ago and it was just a little bit too harsh for my tastes. I drive my Z28 daily in every type of weather imaginable...squawking the tires at 15 MPH in the rain was getting kind of old.
I had my car at his place a few weeks ago for major repairs and upgrades (new opti/waterpump/cam/etc) and Dave and I decided that the level 3 was too much for what I'm after, so he made some modifications for me.
The "level 2.5" I ended up with has most all of the level 3 parts, but the clutches are stock material (more clutches than stock though) and the band is somewhere between a fresh stock band and an all-out race band that you would get with the level 3.
I love the tranny as it is now. The shifts are very firm, but smooth...in combination with a 3000 stall TC, you barely notice the shifts at part throttle. Full throttle shifts, of course, are MUCH firmer.
Go ahead and give Dave a call and let him know what your plans are for the car and how you usually use it (daily driver, strip only, etc) and he'll work something out with you.
