Tranny Problems

I have an A4 and last night it started shifting really rough. It would jerk you in the seat on the 1-2 shift under light acceleration. This morning I checked the fluid and it was about a quart low and there was like metal shavings on the dip stick. What is wrong w/ my transmission? I'm guessing this is pretty bad. It goes in and out of gear fine and it doesn't feel like it is slipping, it just shifts really rough. Any ideas?

If the PCM senses slip it causes the tranny to go to full line pressure which causes a harsh 1-2 shift. This resets though after you shut off the car. Metal shavings on the dipstick is not good. You should drop the pan and check for any shavings there.

Thanks, I'm going to drop the pan this weekend and change the fluid/filter. Hopefully it won't be covered in shavings. Do you think changing the fluid would help? It was rather low on fluid, could that cause it to slip?

Yes, low fluid will cause slip. As long as there arent any shavings in the pan, I would put a the new filter on and fresh fluid and go.
Old fluid will break down when hot, so new fluid will deffinitely help.

Re: Tranny Problems

This is what i felt on the trans am i test drove. IT has a shift kit on it and the owner said it was set to shift perfectly at WOT and is really rough on the 1-2 shift as a result. The other shifts are all fine. I really want to buy this car but I wont have any money when I do to fix a transmission so is it true?
