the TPIS ZZ409 Cam

What do you think of it. I am pretty sure I am going to go with this cam. They really know their stuff there and this was made specifically for the LT1. Lets hear some opinions.

Re: the TPIS ZZ409 Cam

I had one and I liked it. Sound great and made good power. I still got good gas mileage even though I never had it tuned. I dynoed 331hp with that cam untuned. I think the specs are 287/287 226/226@50 520/520 lift with 1.5 rockers 112 lsa
The resale on the cam is great I sold mine for 230. with 20,000 miles on it on ebay.

But the down side is the price 400. You could have a custom cam made for your car for less.
Also I dont know if the car will pass emissions if that is a concern.

Re: the TPIS ZZ409 Cam

I am currently running the TPIS ZZ9 cam...something almost unheard of on this board since everyone thinks it's better to put 236/242 cams in their stock-headed cars.....

Anyway, it made 340rwhp and 355rwtq, and since then I have added walboro255 and moser 12 bolt....I am hoping for more, but thats a good baseline to judge off of with mildly ported heads and the usual bolt ons.

The power rose right up to 6100 and then started to drop off, so its street friendly as well

The 409 is a bit bigger so there is potentially some more peak power to be had, but overall you're right, these cams are quality pieces from TPiS...go for it.

Re: the TPIS ZZ409 Cam

Correct on the specs. They are asking $375 for them now, but remember, these were made specifically for our LT1 engines unlike the comp cams are made for many small blocks. 331 rwhp is a great number untuned. I am hoping for 350 tuned. Heard a car idle with this cam and sounds like it has good chop to me. Overall I think I should be happy.

Re: the TPIS ZZ409 Cam

how streetable is a 287/287 cam ??? I have the 306 and it's "only" 230/244.....I got 380 RWHP out of it with a set of GTP stage II's...I didn't start losing power on the dyno til 6600.....you guys say this other cam drops off at 6100??

Re: the TPIS ZZ409 Cam

It is very streetable. It will pull to 7000rpm without floating the valves as long as you have the right springs. But it peaked at 6200 in my car. When I dynoed my car I had BBK shorty headers stock ex 48mm tb and stock air box with a kn filter. I did have tea heads and 1.6rr a stock stall converter and stock tune. I drove the car every where. And it got great gas mileage. My best time with that setup was a 13.02 @108 That was on the stock tune and stock converter. I think it would of whent to 12.40 or lower with a tune and converter as well as a few other mods. The cam does sound more agressive than an xe 230/236 I asume because it was a single pattern.
