There is a difference because of the coolant bypass hose which should be in the back.

Negative. Most, if not all, heads for LT1s have the holes on both ends and the unused ones are plugged. I've never heard of a left/right specific head for a SBC.

thats what i thought there are identical holes on both heads . the coolant pipe goes in the back and the front holes are pluged but these heads came with no plugs which is fine i just did not want to be over looking anything with this buildup. so should i be ok? thanks again for all you help.

Ok, I got my head with plugs and that's the only reason I can think that they would have them numbered.

The valves also have numbers? That's how you tell which valve goes in each specific location.

I also have TPiS/AFR 195cc heads and I recall them being numbered as well. We put the heads on the corosponding sides. Its been 42K miles since and no problems with them.
