"Torquest" Cam

I am currently building a LT1 to drop into a 96 c1500 chevy pick it is a shortcab short bed truck weighing in around 5k pounds. So i need to find a cam that is really gonna move this thing. I have a Stall around 2400rpm. But from the looks of it the powerband of all the typical cams cc305, 503, 847 LT4 etc is too high. I had used the cc306 in my old 95 and it was an awesome cam but i dont think it would suit this kind of setup. Any suggestions? and what cam makes the most torque in the lowerband?

Re: "Torquest" Cam

Probably going to have to get a good custom cam since all the standard LT1 cams are designed for the cars, not trucks. Talk to Bret Bauer or Cam Motion and they'll hook you up.

Re: "Torquest" Cam

Yea im looking into that as we speak, ive heard of a couple guys running stock lt4 cams with a stall around 2800. But again the main issue is that most of these cams were designed for 3600 pound cars not 5000 pound trucks:P got love customization.....

Re: "Torquest" Cam

Get a BIG RV cam and it will blow the tires off that thing.
There are a bunch of TORQUE cams ot there,I would seek help from a manufacturer.

Might look at the b-body side of the LT1 thing. Also unless you added a crap load of weight to your truck I think you are way off on weight.

You are not going to find a lot of cams that will make a lot more peak torque than all the rest, key is going to be at what RPM that torque is made.

Crane 210/224(also called the 227 because that is the end of the PN), GMPP 845, GMPP ZZ4 cam, and the cam from the 383 base crate motor all come to mind for off the shelf.
For custom www.advancedinduction.com is another company you could talk too.

Re: "Torquest" Cam

For TQ, the stock cam is fine. I only have bolt on's and I'm making 330 ft-lbs of TQ at the rear wheels. That's around 375-380 ft-lbs of TQ at the flywheel. Like 96capricemgr said, the cam is going to shift around the TQ curve more than increase your TQ, unless you increase your cubic inches, or port heads... Plus, the stock cam get's great gas milage, and runs smooth in the low RPM's. A custom cam can probably tweak the TQ just for your liking though.

Good advice. Just use the Lloyd Elliot B Body Heads/Cam for this and you'll be very happy.

I have a totally stock LT1 in my 1990 K5 Blazer, which is heavier then your truck, and it runs pretty good, its not a race car by any means(4x4, 4" lift, 33" tires---planning on 6" lift and 39" tires), but pulls fine, lots of get up and go, it can squalk(sp?) the tires at will

its all in the rear end gears

are you running that truck on MPFI or a carb?

Also unless you added a crap load of weight to your truck I think you are way off on weight.
nope these trucks are heavy 5000 punds is pretty close, give or take 250 pounds

I should have mentioned this is a B-body LT1...i dunno how much of a difference that makes, I know it has the iron heads instead of the aluminum ones on the f-bodys.

PLus i didnt want a cam just for trq, i would like to see an overall power improvment. Ideally i would liek to make about 375 hp to the ground. Realistically it may be 350 or less. I will look into all these cams and more suggestions are welcome.

Thanks guys

Crane 227, I wish I never took it out of my car. It would light the tires up at idle, + it was so much fun to drive around town with all the torque it made.

Re: "Torquest" Cam

I remember one guy here putting 315 to the wheels, not impressive sounding till you hear it was through exhaust MANIFOLDS. Do not think you will get 375 to the wheels though.

The pressed studs and tall guides of the iron heads limit cam selection unless you are willing to mod them. By .525 lift the pushrods are getting close to touching the head and that is about the limit we recommend for lift. The right seals can get you more clearance at the guide but even then the pressure needed becomes a concern with the pressed studs.
