Exclamation Torque Converter Questions

I bought a Hughues 3500 stall and i finally found a shop to install it. I talked to Trans King, a big big tranny shop, and they wouldnt have anything to do with it. why is that? i found some customs shop that would do it, but they said my car wouldnt run right at all if i had the stall in there. Are they bsing me or am i just missing the obvious here. thanks

Re: Torque Converter Questions

They dont know what they're talking about. Get it done, but do put in a large tranny cooler, especially if its not a lockup TC. Those heavy wheels, with stock gears and a high stall TC will heat up trans fluid in a hurry.

Re: Torque Converter Questions

Maybe the shop was thinking about the OBD1 not accepting stalls higher than 3000?

Re: Torque Converter Questions

OBD1 can accept high stalls some tuners have it worked out and my uderstanding is the only time it might be a problem even without the fix is after a hard launch at the track. A lot of shops think high stalls and small diameter converters are a terrible thing, this is because all they know how to do is grocery getter trannies and have not kept up with current technology, simply put they are wrong do it and enjoy.

That's what I was thinking. Also, I thought it was anything over 2800 and the computer started having a **** fit?

Re: Torque Converter Questions

I havent had any probs with my 3000 stall besides the free traction delete that comes with it . I was 4th in line at the track last saturday and pulled a 1.8 on toyo proxes. After the track got messy later on I couldnt do better than a 1.95 . But it was amazing on the freshly prepped strip , i need D/R's . I say go for it youll love it. I waited till I blew my tranny to put the stall in tho , it went I said hell its comin out I might as well put a stall in it.

Best mod to go w/ a coverter is a BIG COOLER!.. that will save your tranny from the peril's of death!

Re: Torque Converter Questions

My Edge does not build heat I am running a different fluid than I did with the old TC though but it still runs cooler than the 12" 1650 stall GM unit I had before. Overcooling is possible so I would say if you want a big cooler use one with a viscosity based bypass acts sort of like a thermostat Tru-cool and B&M both sell the same coolers but under their own brand names that have this feature. A friend has a 3000 Edge in his Impala with an OBD1 swap before he got an update from BH he did have the limp mode problem when the car hooked well, now that he got the update from BH traction is his only problem. I only have a 2800 and run street tires with a best 60 of 1.9 sofar so I have not tested BHs fix myself yet.
