Torque for alum. heads?

Hey Guys ,

Just wondering what you torque your heads to I heard the alum. heads require a little less Torque I was planning to go 50, 60 , 70, then 77 or 80 for the final pass..

I know some will think 65 but I have heard many times thats not enough...

So what is your thoughts on this..I am using Llyods LE2 heads and Le1.2 cam So am I good to go all the above numbers or?? BTW stock OEm gaskets and I think they are .029 thick

Thanks...?
Chris

Obviously, you can squeeze them down as hard as you see fit but, personally, I would not go past 70#. Be advised that there is a point at which the threads will pull out of the block. I once had an earlier sbc Chevy block that pulled threads at 65#. That was several years ago but I've never forgotten the sickening feeling in the pit of the stomach when the tension on the torque wrench suddenly went slack as the threads came up. Nowadays, I typically stop at 65 pounds on my Super Stock LT1 when using a stock gasket. I've never had a problem and it regularly sees 8000+ RPM.

Good luck.

As long as you clean the block threads before you get started you shouldn't have problems. Everyone and their mother has their own specs that they like to torque everything to. If your just looking at what the crowd does to get an idea, your like me. I do 75 ft/lbs and have never had a problem. I don't see why 65 wouldn't work either.

Torque values will not depend on the head material but on the fasteners and the material used to lubricate them. ARP's site has some good info on fasteners.

I was just confirming the stock value, since no one else in the thread had. I don't know why it would not be sufficient. There are literally millions of engines using that value.

Rich

That is what I told him a couple months ago when he asked on the b-body forum.
