too much oil?

what would adding too much oil do to an engine? i changed the oil in my car today but i didnt change the filter becuase i did that a few weeks ago when i did the headers. i added 5 quarts after i drained it all out. when i check the oil its about 1/2" above the 4th dot. is this going to hurt anything? oil pressure doesnt seem to be abnormally high or anything.

You can end up messing up your seals but that doesn't always happen. There is also alittle more drag on the crank and that will kill a little horses.

If you're only a 1/2 quart over you're usually fine with most engines, it won't hurt a thing. Some engines (like the LS1) can even handle 1 to 1.5 quarts over. If you're just slightly over the safety zone, it'll usually burn off very quickly or get sucked through the PCV system. Plus you'll froth up the oil pretty good and get lots of bubbles in the oil (aeration).

If you're way way over, then you could definitely do much more serious damage. But this would be at the 2 or 3 quarts over type of level.

I wouldn't recommend it, but I'd be willing to bet you could have 6qts in the LT1 and not cause serious damage.

if its a HALF INCH above the 4th dot on the dipstick... then i would drain some... you can start a leak by putting too much pressure on the seals... my buddy did that once...

depending on the filter... you probably have .6 to 1 quart too much.. i would let some out to be safe
