I got 285/40/17 Firestone SZ50s for $660 from Tire Rack. They fit nice on 9.5s.
bud m how did you fit 285's up front and not get them to rub while turning?

what would be smarter to buy. (2) 255, 40, 17 firehawk sz50 ep's up front, (2) 285, 40, 17 firehawk sz50 ep's in back, or 285 40 17 firehawk sz50 ep's all around, or (2) 275, 40, 17 goodyear eagle F1 GS D3 in back and (2) 285, 40, 17 goodyear eagle F1 GS D3's also the firehawks are rated Z, and the good year Y, which i was told z is better but according to the descriptions i've read the y is actually a faster rating.

You should really stick with the same size and brand front to rear so that you can rotate them for better tire wear. Also, unlike the Corvette, the 4th gen f-bodies were designed to use the same size tire front and rear for best handling. Putting a larger tire on the rear will just add understear to the car.

i think i'm gonna go with the eagle f1 gs d3's goodyears cuttin me a pretty good deal on em. i just dont know if i should go 275 or 285 all around. plus i've heard it before but i'm a bit foggy on its meaning what does understear do?

I'd stick with the 275s, that is the stock diameter. Plus, unless you are running 17x9.5" or wider rims, then the tire spec shows a 275 as the widest you should go on a 17x9" rim.

Understeer is when you have to add more steering input to get the car to go where you want. The stock alignment already has plenty of understeer dialed in, so unless you've corrected the alignment you really don't want any extra.

I've used Futura, wasn't all that impressed.
Kumho are the best cheapies I've found.
Nice aggressive traction, and work really well in the rain.

No you need an 11" rim to fit the 315's. The biggest tires your will hold is a 285. The 285s will work from what I hear. Haven't installed mine yet.
I just had a friend in Cali. install 315 DR on his stock SS rims and they looked pretty damn good! When he told me over the phone a tire shop convinced him the 315's will fit and look good I said "hell NO"! I saw them a few months later and I was corrected!

so understear would make turning harder and takin corners would take more effort? its odd i would think using a smaller tire up front would give you a better turning ability and less work with the steering wheel

I am also trying to decide between 275/40/17s and 285/40/17s for my 17x9.5 ZR1 rims on my Fbody.

The 285 will ahve a little more width, but a little more height as well. And Im concerned with the front tires rubbing when I turn with the 285s. Does anyone know for sure?

I bought my 275 40 17 BF Goodrich G-Force tires for $614 out the door. I love em! I live in MI so I need a good all season. I would reccomend these tires.
