Most manufacturers recommend a 9.5" wide wheel for the 285/40-17's so I suspect he want a photo to see if it looks sort of "pinched" on a 9.0" wide rim.

Why not go 275? Is the tire you're looking at only available in 285?
You'll probably get just as good if not better traction from a tire that fits the rim the right way and it'll cost less too. Besides, traction's all in the compound not in the width.. of course I'm assuming that's why you want a wider tire... As for looks, I don't think you'll be able to tell a difference.. I mean we're talking about 10 mm here
