timing set issues with Cloyes 3145 and Ai cam

So I've got a custom-grind Ai cam in a 383 LT1 I'm building up. Ordered the wrong timing set a while back on accident, got the 3100 mistakenly and didn't realize it till I went to install the cam gear and the bolt holes didn't line up. I ordered the 3145 set and went to install it today and have the exact same problem, the 3 cam bolt holes are spaced too far out on the cam gear for the cam. With the dowel pin through the cam gear, the bolt holes are easily 3/16" longer radius circle than those of the cam. I compared the 3145 cam gear to the 3100 that I still have and the bolt hole pattern is the exact same. Did I get the wrong cam gear in the right package or is the cam wrong?

Since the 3100 is for older SBCs and the 3145 is for the later roller cams, I would say the new gear is not in the correct package. The bolt pattern is not the same and the 3145 should fit an LT1 cam.

Are you sure you didn't get two 3100 cam gears by accident?

I must have because the cam gear that came in the 3145 box is the exact same as the one in the 3100 box ugh, so much for getting the engine together over break

Sometimes the things we take for granted during a build are what slow us the most.

If you want to be extra sure, give Ron a call and he can always double check what was ordered. Good luck.

oh thats for sure. I called Jegs this morning and they are supposed to call me back when they have another 3145 pulled from the shelf to open up and check for comparisons sake. depending on if that turns up anything, I'll give Ai a call and run it past them.

Make em overnight it.....I hasve had to before and they never had a problem with it. They sent me 4 wheels once with the wrong bolt pattern for a truck

I was glad to hear it too. I was also really impressed that Phil at Ai e-mailed me directly asking about the situation. That really raised my opinion of Ai even more. And thanks, definitely looking forward to finishing this build. Only been 2 years and going in the making.

If I was in a hurry for it or was going to have the time to install it, I would have. Tomorrow is the last day I really have any time to work on it and I have other things I can do anyway. I'm only back at school for a month and then its back home again for the summer, so it won't be in pieces for much longer.

Times like this is when it is nice to have some used stock parts laying around for comparison. You could have compared the stocker to the cam and the "new" timing sets and you would have quickly seen the new sets were wrong.

Don't feel bad, you're not the only one.

didn't even think of that until after I'd dealt with Jeg's. grabbed the stocker cam and did compare, only further confirmed what I'd already been told.
