Timing/Retard issues, please help!
Timing/Retard issues, please help!
Just installed new opti and timimng is off pretty bad, we checked everything possible, knock modules, knock sensor, plug wires, coils, MAF, and the list goes on. Does anyone know of something else that would make the timing off? any advice and help is appreciated!
Re: Timing/Retard issues, please help!
Is yours NON vented? If so did you line the master spline up right?
If it has been converted to vented the only thing it could be is the drive pin is not in the correct slot.

It turns out it is VERY easy to assemble the splines incorrectly, even though there is the "odd" spline that's only supposed to slide in one way. I bet 10-20% of the people manage to assemble it incorrectly.

myself along with another LT1 inclined friend, uninstalled everything and reinstalled to the T, the timing is of due to us checking with a timing light, so any other suggestions, maybe a sensor I have over looked?
Re: Timing/Retard issues, please help!
Perhaps you had some experience looking at it with a timing light when it was running correctly and used that for reference (since timing lights are not really used for diagnostics on these cars). If it does actually look off, then the computer has mysteriously changed something or the opti is indeed indexed wrong (as preposterous as that may seem).
Re: Timing/Retard issues, please help!
Timing depends solely on the input from the Opti optical sensor, and the timing tables in the PCM.
Apparently in the past you put a mark on the damper, correlating that to the timing advance shown on a PCM scanner.... is that correct? And now you are comparing the advance as indicated on the mark on the damper, and when comparing it to the advance shown on the scanner, they do not agree?
Or did you figure some other way to utilize the timing light?

Ya, how exactly are you using it?
Get a reading from the pcm, thats what matters.
You are still being extremely vauge. Off? How is it off? Is it too high? Too low? Does it jump around?
We can't help you if you just say my timing is off.

ok, it idles fine, but when the throttle opens up the timing does the opposite of advances, looks like at least 15 degress, we marked the crank pulley/damper TDC and when accelerated mark moves to the right, minimum of 15 degrees, please help! we have removed and reinstalled the brand new opti about 4 times now, every time same result
