Timing Gears

Is there a way to get the timing gears not the chain setup to fit under the cover? I know there would be modification involved but I just wonder if anyone has tried this and if it is possible?

Re: Timing Gears

You wouldn't want to do it even if you could make it fit. The gear noise will drive the knock sensor crazy. Causing knock retard all the time, which will diminish power.

Re: Timing Gears

The LT1's unique timing setup could make it difficult (opti/waterpump setup)- but like 96camaroSS said, no one with an LT1 does it because you can't use a knock sensor anymore. If you're looking for added strength just get a double roller. If you want a whining noise get a supercharger.

Re: Timing Gears

It's not specific to LT1/LT4 cars. It's ANY engine that uses a knock sensor in conjunction with it's engine management! I have a friend of the family that has a Chevy Indy Pace truck. He had been wanting to drop a stroker in the thing for a long time. He finally did and was talking to me about it. Giving me all the details of the engine internals, ect. Then he tells me his engine builder suggested putting in a gear drive! So I ask in the most calm and diplomatic tone I can muster "what the ***k was he thinking." My friend looks at me all slack jawed and asked why I said that. I told him that any reputable engine builder should have known that you don't run a gear drive on a computer controlled engine with a knock sensor. I can't wait till I get the chance to hook my scanner up to it to show him how much timing is being pulled!

Re: Timing Gears

I would love to get just a double roller and call it a day, but no I have to have a 94. Either way I look at it Im in for some serious cash. I would have to buy a stock chain for a 94 and a new opti and waterpump all stock, or switch to the 95 style cover, electric waterpump, double roller, and all new gasket set.
