Timing chain question for upgrade...
93-94 Facts
>Dont even technically require a dowel pin so it can be flush with the timing gear
>cannot use any aftermarket timing chain PERIOD
>opti is driven from timing gear (splines inside the gear)
95-97 facts
>Require over .520- I believe .680 " long dowel pin since opti is driven directly off the dowel pin
>With an electric water pump conversion and some timing cover clearancing you can run a true double roller timing set for any 86-up SBC with factory roller cam
Good timing set: Rollmaster from Competition Products
Bad Timing set: Comp Cams 3136
Factory 94 chains brand new are loose, but they do not stretch much more beyond that point so its not a big deal, the only loss in power you might have is if it were to stretch, being loose in the first place since its meant to have it on it wont really affect it at all.

hey guys i finally got around to doing the CSI swap...and yes I did new chain as well, but kept my TPIS cam in there. Anyway, stock chains are more than enough. I replaced mine with a stock replacement from gmpartsdirect.com
honestly, i probably didnt have to though, because even with 70k on the car, that chain showed barely any wear or stretching. However for good measure I did the entire swap, and all I can say is that I am MORE than happy with the results from the CSI. The car absolutely screams through redline now, because there is no parasitic drag anymore from the waterpump driveshaft running off of the cam sprocket. good buy
as for the most recent question which was already thoroughly laid out - dont bother switching to a double roller or whatever is available if you have the 93-94. I *might* be able to justifty it if you already had the vented opti on the 95+ LT1 models.
